Just had my mind blown once more. Before clicking any links, please read.
One of my closest friends has studied music. I had the honor to be allowed to listen when she performed her final exam.
To this day (which is about twelve years later), she has no idea that I saw a cartoon flashing before my eyes that has never, ever been drawn and only existed during that exam, created by the music she played.
Today, I found a set of Disney animation “showreels” with works from specific Disney animators of the 1940′s.
Which led me to this gem right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72MXrQxIWCc
The header of the clip already tells the tale, this is a jazzy take on Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the bumblebee”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYAJopwEYv8
I’d like to invite you to try.
First, listen to the actual “flight of the bumblebee” recording, and see if you can envision a bustling insect flying about, perhaps experiencing the adventure of its lifetime. Then check what the Disney animators made of it, and see if it comes close. It seriously did for me.
I seriously and deeply love Disney’s Silly Symphonies and Warner’s Merrie Melodies. And those two pieces of music/animation are an excellent explanation why.
