In this first #makevember post, I will tell you about my neurosis of user experience. Specifically me, as a user, using my own products. If you follow me, you are no stranger to my tendency to make my own tools, to make more stuff. #makersgonnamake y’all….but what you don’t know is that once that tool is made, are the subsequent variations that come after it until it’s perfect for my own personal use. It’s a crippling fact.
Here’s what I made…or re-made: my mallet. I use this mallet everyday, for leather work, for nylon work, for pretty much anything because its the best. Non marring UHMWPE that machined with a hollow centre to fill with steel bb’s for a dead blow effect and a previously a cheap $.50 screw on handle from Lee-Valley. 4 years later the head is still functional but using the same handle, I decided to make my user experience of this mallet more enjoyable. I made an octagonal Japanese Wa-style handle design with cocobolo, rock maple and some Indian rosewood, sandwiched with some vulcanized fibreboard to introduce some colour. A huge 4” bolt was sunk into the handle after I cut off the hex head so it could be attached to the white mallet head. This handle was longer so I can get more WACK when I needed it, but when I need control, I can still choke up and get my hand on the actual mallet head. I also replaced the thinning cork on the top side of the handle with some new black felt. What I like about the Octogon shape is that it won’t just roll away anymore when placed down on the table.
