The wheels are finally back in from my new friends at Houston Dynamic Services after being re-trued and rebalanced. Both wheels had about 0.080" wobble to them before (maybe they got dropped at some point, or strapped to a pallet in some weird way. It’s hard to know. In any case they were literally bent out of shape.) The guys at the shop said they were able to get everything back to within two or three thousandths. Three carving mallets (four if you count mine, over there on the left)- 8-½" long, 4" diameter, 1.5 lbs (about 725 grams) each, all made from reclaimed, quartersawn Osage orange grown right here in Houston. One is spoken for, but the other two are still available. I have been using mine for chopping dovetails and carving letters for about three years now, and aside from the oxidation, it still looks brand new. As a bonus, one nut has right-handed threads, and the other, left-handed, meaning you need two different taps. Because why would any single thing about this ridiculous odyssey of a project be easy. /////////////////////////////////////////// Back in business! How cool is that! Hopefully now this thing is... As it turns out it had gotten bent somewhere along the way- the tapered shaft was running about 0.020" out of true, which translates to a lot of wobble on a 30" wheel running at full speed. Luckily I found a place here in Houston that specializes in fixing bent shafts (“So do you think you can fix it?” “Well, we’ll try, but we might break it. Either way you’ll have to pay for it.”) Onwards and upwards. /////////////////////////////////////////// Hotting up one of the upper spindle bearings in my very fancy... Posted: 10 Jun 2015 02:31 PM PDT http://clarkatron.tumblr.com/post/121217747094 Hotting up one of the upper spindle bearings in my very fancy spindle heater/hardware store-grade electric kettle. Hearing the bearings up to 200° or so will expand the metal by a few thousandths of an inch- just enough to slip it on to the spindle. Once the bearing is in place and cools down, it will shrink around the spindle and form a press fit.
