Signs from casaBrandon, a center of queer culture devoted to the promotion and defense of human rights in Buenos Aires. Many of our interviewees refer to casaBrandon as a second home, a place without judgment and with thoughtful taste and people. On the first floor, there is a gallery with a rotating exhibit, and every Wednesday through Sunday, there are performances, live music shows, and film screenings on the second floor.

On the outer door, a sign hangs reading “No toques timbre, pasá- estamos abiertxs,” which translates to “Don’t ring the doorbell, come in- we’re open. Based on our interviews, “open” seems to be the key word in describing this place- open minds and open arms. One thing I’ve been thinking about recently is the way in which language shapes behavior. Instead of “abiertos,” this sign reads “abiertxs.” In Spanish, words are either masculine or feminine, and any situation with just one male in it automatically becomes masculine, ending with an “o” instead of an “a.” One of many insidious ways that designates the feminine as lesser in society-- and excludes people who don’t self-identify within a rigid, often arbitrary binary. Many of the organizations we’ve been researching and interviewing bypass this by using “x” or “e” instead, which includes the whole gender spectrum. BIFE’s new album is called “Toda,” which subverts the idea that “Todo”- “everything”- should be designated as male. 

The sign on the bathroom, meanwhile, reads: “MAN - WOMAN - FUCK YOU,” expressing the same idea with explicit humor.
