Today, I tried casein tempera for painting on location. I wanted to see how quickly the paints would dry. All the colors in my storage palette contained a bit of W&N watercolor blending medium, but the titanium white was straight from the tube. It’s hot today and the paints did surprisingly well. I did have to mist the palette once in a while but it was comfortable to work with the colors. I also decided to use this opportunity to try my alla prima pochade box that I had bought two years before for oil painting and hadn’t used it. I attached my storage palette to the auxiliary palette of the box using velcro and I placed the cup with water into the drawer of the box. I also used my natural hog oil brushes this time. Because of that the finished painting looks like an oil painting and because of the matte finish it also looks like a gouache painting :) I didn’t use water to dilute the paints to achieve a better flow, instead I used casein emulsion which is sold separately. For the support I used a board with Arches hot pressed watercolor paper mounted on it. I made many of those boards a year ago for gouache. So this is just a test piece done from our veranda. I wanted to test this setup and the paints before taking them to paint outside. I loved the experience. So far, casein tempera looks like a nice replacement for oils for me.
