Hi! Can you please give my step by step instructions on how to ring someone up on the register AND how to do returns? I worked the register today but I just don't want to forget for next time!

Register:

"Hey, how's it going? Did you find everything alright?"

Hit "Register." Swipe your card and it'll take you to the register screen. Then you can start scanning the customer's items.

"Okay, your total comes up to be $xx.xx." Hit "tender" and it'll take you to the Club Cali page. "Have you joined Club Cali yet?"

If the customer says yes, hit "yes" and ask if they have their club ID. If they have their ID, scan the ID. If not, they can enter their phone number on the keypad.

If the customer says no, hit "no." "Are you interested in joining? Club Cali is different from our e-mails and text messages. It's Hollister's rewards program where members get exclusive discounts and offers." Then the customer will either hit "no" or "yes" on the keypad.

After that's done, "How will you be paying today?"

Fold the items quickly - doesn't have to be beautiful. Bag it. 

"Would you like your receipt in the bag?" Hand the customer the bag(s).

If there's a promo card to give out, hand it to the customer and state the promotion - ex. "This is for 20% off your entire purchase starting January 26." Do not place the card in the bag unless the customer states otherwise.

Return:

Go to the register screen. Hit "return." 

Get a manager to swipe for you.

"What's the reason for your return today?"

Take the items and make sure that they are a in a returnable condition, meaning they haven't been worn, washed, stained, etc.

If the customer does not have their receipt, hit "no receipt." You'll need to see some form of photo ID. Either swipe their license/ ID or enter the info manually. Hit "next." Then scan the tags of the items they want to return.

If the customer has a receipt, scan the receipt. 

Tap all of the items that the customer wants to return (to do this, match the SKU on the tag with the SKU on the screen). Hit "next." 

Enter the reason(s) for return. Hit "next." 

It'll take you to the next screen listing all the returned items and a negative dollar amount, which is the amount that the customer gets back. Hit "tender." 

It'll take you a list of options for refund options. It'll be the customer's original form or purchase and/ or merchandise credit. Ask how they'll like their refund. 

If they choose to have it back on their credit card, hit "credit." Ask the customer to sign the keypad.

If the customer chooses to have it back on their debit card, hit "debit" and have them swipe their debit card.

If the customer chooses merch credit, hit "merch. credit" and grab a merch credit card from the drawer. Swipe that and wait for the card to activate.

If the customer chooses cash, choose "cash" and give them their cash refund from the cash drawer. Grab a void log from the drawer. Have the customer sign the top portion and sign at the x. Insert the log into the printer. Hit "enter." Put the log back in the side of the cash wrap.

Wait for the new receipt to print. Staple it to the old receipt.

"Have a good one!"

Immediately re-sensor all the returns. Sensors go on the seam, with the sensor on the inside and the pin on the outside.The returns will be go-backs, back-stocked, in the return bin, or in the damaged bin.

If you need to get a manager to your room, just say "Hey. Can I get a manager up to [insert room here]?"

Umm... I'm not on a register right now, so I don't remember the exact steps, but basically:

First, you scan their old receipt. 

A list of items will come up. Highlight the items that they want to return. 

Press "Tender" like you would a normal transaction. The register will give you options on how they can get refunded.

If they choose to have their amount refunded to their credit or debit card, just choose "Credit/ Debit."

If they choose merchandise credit, press "Merch. Credit." There should be a stack of merchandise credit cards in one of the drawers. Swipe the card.

If they choose cash, press "cash." The register will tell you to insert the log. In one of the drawers, there should be a stack of forms. Have the customer fill out their personal info and sign it. Enter the form into the bottom of the receipt printer. Press "Enter" on the register to continue. The machine should be printing info onto the log. File the log into the folder holding thingie at the side of cash wrap. Give the customer back the cash.

Once the new receipt prints, staple the old receipt with the new receipt.

Here's a little annoying story that happened the other day at work,

I was working cash wrap, and we were REALLY busy so the line was incredibly long, and we had a lot of tourists as well. As a result of it being crowded, and people buying loads of things at once, we ran out of the large bags and the medium bags and were having to give customers 2 of the small bags. Nobody was complaining about it, and it was going okay.

So I get this one guy who had so many clothes, and he was arguing with me about the price of a pair of pants and kept on changing his mind on if he wanted them or not. At this point I was really annoyed because he kept making me ring it up, and then remove it, and then ring it up again, and the line was wrapping around the store and it was incredibly frustrating. FINALLY, I had everything rung up and de-sensored and had put his clothes into 2 separate bags because as I said, we were out of the large ones. As I'm putting the last shirt in, he asks if I can put all the clothes into one. I explain to him, and that to VERY NICELY, that we are all out of the large bags, and only have these small ones. He gives me a dirty look and asks me to check in the back for a large bag. We obviously had the bags in the back, but we were too busy to go get them and my manager said to just forget about it and someone would bring out the bags to us eventually. So I go on a wild hunt for a spare large bag and I finally found one lying around and transfer all of his clothes into it, and hand him the bag and tell him to "Have a nice day" and he says "cheers" in the most sarcastic tone I have ever heard and goes around muttering how bad the customer service is and blah blah blah.

I hate how some customers are so rude and inconsiderate of us employees. Honestly we're all doing the best we can to make everyone happy and do our jobs as efficiently as possible. Being rude and picky to us isn't going to help your cause at all.
