The X-Files episode Two Fathers first aired on February 7, 1999. The Cancer Man's name was revealed to be CGB Spender. It also revealed the alien black oil was known as Purity. The episode was part of a two episode arc with One Son that saw the end of the mysterious syndicate by alien rebels. It was revealed that the Cancer Man was Agent Mulder and Agent Spender's father. It was also revealed that the Cancer Man's ex-wife Cassandra Spender was the first successful human/alien hybrid, which would trigger alien colonization. The episode won an Emmy for Make-Up and Veronica Cartwright was also nominated for an Emmy. ("Two Fathers", X-Files, TV Event)

jeffrey spender got such an unimaginably raw deal from everyone involved, whenever i get back around to his part of the story I can't help feeling like the character was terribly under-utilized and deserved more fleshing out and agency because he -- and cassandra! -- were actually very important players on the overall plot web but they were introduced late and then killed off too soon.

I would love to write something focusing on the web of the Mulders and the Spenders and how much of the Syndicate's fate and the country's fate they held suspended between them. The part of the plot between gesthemane/the reduxes/patient x/the red and the black/two fathers/one son is the most interesting part of the mytharc to me and I wish it had been given more room to unfold instead of being swept aside for the more gnostic rapture-like plot. It's the Succession Family Drama But With Aliens of it all that interests me 😅

Tragic Cassandra Challenge

Episode 5X13 - Patient "X" CASSANDRA: I'm sure the government's involved. They just, they don't want us to know about it all.

MULDER: Cassandra ... there was a time when I would've believed what you're saying without a doubt.

CASSANDRA: There is no doubt, Mr. Mulder. I know what I've experienced. I ... I have been through the terror and the tests more times than I can count. I have had an unborn fetus taken from me. But they're not here for the reasons that you might think. They're here to deliver a message. Except ... something has gone wrong. There are ... there are other forces at work. They're going to be calling me. I can feel it. And you, of all people, need to know about this because you're the one that can do something. Write us a story that spans from when a young Cassandra Spencer learns that she was pregnant (with Spender's sibling? with a hybrid baby? or with a just alien baby?) in the 1960s or 1970s and continue your story through when her baby was taken from her. If you wish, you can allude to her conversation decades later with Mulder.

cassandra talking to mulder for the first time. talking about his regression, learning samantha was abducted, so earnest & hopeful with a sweet, almost naive smile on her face.

i love her. i've been trying to read myth x but i've only made it through chapter three, which is really just the set up. the stories/myths the characters embody, the main players, and the different aliens. it's interesting but some i have a hard time understanding, or i just wholeheartedly don't agree lol

but ! it has made me think. cassandra really believes there are benevolent aliens trying to help the human race, still going about it through abductions & possibly experiments. she says there are these benevolent aliens and other players (and of course the government is involved).

it made me think about the changed story of samantha's abduction. one version it was at night from her bedroom, the other they were home alone playing a game & arguing over the tv. i don't think this is intentional, but what if samantha wasn't abducted just the once and mulder combines the two.

he says he isn't afraid, they tell him not to be. samantha won't be harmed & she'll be returned. he says "i want to believe." it's this that he's held onto for decades. but samantha doesn't return.

we can believe this was a lie, the show is full of them. it was just something to help him being complacent. but if cassandra is to be believed about benevolent aliens, it makes sense that there were two separate abductions. it was the second one that was done by the aliens we're more familiar with / the shadow government.

I rewatched “Patient X” and “Two Fathers/One Son” tonight and I just have to say, Veronica Cartwright knocked it out of the fucking park. Holy lord.

We get precious little time with Cassandra Spender, but because of how Cartwright plays her so beautifully, she exudes warmth and sincerity every time she’s onscreen. She loves her son despite him not believing her, and she continues to love and respect Mulder and Scully even when they have their doubts about her stories too. Cartwright’s acting is quiet and understated, never too much or too little. It’s perfect.

Jeffrey Spender was never really working for his dad or trying to further his own career. He was only really ever trying to protect his mother. And he couldn't. And he lost her and his dad shot him in the face.

I can't figure out why I hated him when I was younger now bc now I have nothing but heartbreak for him.
