I'm going to pick at the last trumpet (TLT) because I just got a lovely comment on it last night <3

You looked at God, and you said: “I have just told you that I am the product of my parents’ genocide.” [Harrow the Ninth, Chapter 14] Pre-canon: the line of the Tomb-keepers demands an heir, no matter the cost. Featuring a small-scale genocide, the breakdown of a marriage, an angry ghost of the MILF persuasion, and a normal amount of bones.

I wrote Trumpet last year for Fandom Trumps Hate 2023, and it's about Harrow's parents engineering the death of an entire generation of their House to conceive a necromantic child <3 #justTLTthings

@/theriverbeyond prompted me the fic in exchange for a donation to the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund AND was awesome enough to help me brainstorm so many of the Reverend Parents' creepy vibes :3 Shoutout to @/mayasaura also for helping me brainstorm back when

3. What's your favorite fic that you've written?

OH this is so hard! I have a few I'm very fond of. I'm gonna go with the TLT "Gideon stuck in a timeloop for Act 5 of HtN" fic because I'm very happy with the character voices in that one, I had a BLAST writing the dynamics (Wake! Gideon and Mercy! Gideon and John!) and the experience of writing it was really really fun - it really took a village.

13. How much planning do you do before writing?

Anything from 40% to 80% of the fic. I need to know where it's going, but I WILL end up adding something new while writing it.

23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?

I usually know what I want a chapter to do so I keep writing until I get there. However. I have an ongoing multichapter WIPs that I'm stuck on because I keep writing and still haven't got where I want to be so clearly I need to get better at this :D

🔥 (poking the bear before i run away:) the divine comedy as fanfic

OH, I haven't encountered this in Years! The last time I encountered this as an actual opinion in the wild was when people were really pushing hardcore the "fanfic is better than most published works" argument, and in all cases it's just... anti-intellectualism for the sake of propping up fandom. Same about "the Aeneid is Homer fanfic" or any other similar arguments about any classics or pastiche literary works. It's very reductive of the difference between transformative fandom (cool) and the entire history of literature (a completely different thing) + originality of content =/= quality or literary influence. Anyway with the Divine Comedy in particular, there's very little that's derivative about it so actually if someone genuinely believes that they haven't even read the wikipedia summary <3

5. What's a tag you never want to use for your works even when it applies?

OH good question. I find freeform tags describing relationships annoying. Like, "Zuko is an Awkward Turtleduck" or "Steve Rogers Loves Bucky Barnes" or "Gideon is a Supportive Girlfriend" "John Winchester's A+ Parenting".... some fics I like use tags like these, but many fics I don't like also use them. IDK I find them offputting (though as a reader I don't care)

Also I don't like anything that overshares about my writing process in the tag, because I think of the tags as content advertising for the fic. So "No beta we die like X" and "I wrote this instead of sleeping" -- they won't make anyone click on the fic who wouldn't have otherwise, but are more likely to make people not click if they think it's unedited. And absolutely nothing TMI like "author is X sexuality" or similar.

16. Are one-shots really underrated?

YEAH. Or rather it's the other way around, I think it's longer fics that are sometimes overrated over one-shots. I really love reading WIPs and I WILL read 200k words in one sitting if I'm vibing with it, but IME a well-written one-shot tends to be more tightly plotted than an average chaptered fic, and I'm a fan of meaty one-shots (5k+)

1, 10, 20 for the fanfic writer ask

1. Have you pulled inspiration from media sources other than the property your fic is related to (a plot point from a TV show that has nothing to do with the characters/setting of the fic, a line from a book, etc.)? If so, for which story? Why did you find that media source compelling?

I just did a deep dive in my fic backlog to find an answer to this question and I came to the conclusion that I don't think I have?? I've written a couple crossovers / canon fusions AU, but I don't think that counts. There IS a film that I think would make a good AU (Laura 1944!!!!) but I need to find a good pairing for it. Maybe Charles/Carlos of f1 rpf fame might fit... much to think about.

10. If you could banish a single trope to live at the bottom of the ocean, never to be seen again by any human eyes (or at least your own), which trope would that be?

"Didn't know they were dating" "everyone knew they were together except them" "friends overly invested in getting the ship together" and anything of that variety. BEGONE.

20. Is there anything about any one of your fics that you have been dying to discuss but haven’t had the chance to?

THANK U FOR ASKING. Just want to take the chance to plug in At The Last Trumpet, the TLT fic about the Ninth House Extinction Event (or: The Reverend Mother and Reverend Father fuck to conceive Harrow as the children of the House are murdered). I had so much fun writing it because 1) I got to write Reverend Parents Sex (Reverend Cummies!) but also because 2) I really enjoyed playing with the implications that Anastasia created Teacher and the other Canaan House priests, and how that probably involved mass murder. TLT is such a rich canon to play with and I enjoyed writing that fic a lot!
