Having just come back from seeing Anna Maria for what was meant to be just a coffee, I thought I’d blog about the afternoon as these are just the times I’m going to want to remember the most when the year abroad’s over and I can look back on the whole experience.
After we’d finished our coffee’s at her’s with Fabrizio, her husband she suggested we go for a gelato. I haven’t really done anything today so hadn’t really done anything to deserve it but hey- you’re only on your year abroad once! She took me to Il Re Gelato- a sicilian gelateria which does all her favourite treats from home. First off, she ordered us two cassatta. The way she described it I didn’t think it’d be for me- how wrong I was. This little cake from Palermo is amazing. Sponge moistened with fruit juice and layered with candied fruit and a vanilla ricotta cream covered in a light green marzipan shell and decorated with more candied fruit. Enough sugar for a week- but oh so worth it. As if that wasn’t enough she then said ‘Ice cream? You should have an ice cream.’ Never one to turn such an offer down I had a pot of 3 flavours; pineapple and mint, sicilian orange and a yoghurt, cinnamon and nut one. As Anna Maria said hi to a few friends and familiar faces she saw in the gelateria and others said ‘oh how lovely to hear a proper sicilian accent here’ I marvelled at the italian scene. It really was another one of those precious year abroad moments.
