Gone in 60 Seconds - Despite my devotion to 2017 as the year I work through the Nicolas Cage back catalogue, I somehow managed to completely forget the entire experience of watching this movie. That’s not to say it’s a bad movie - it is arguably a more complete cinematic experience than something like Next - but it is to say that being a complete experience that takes itself relatively seriously makes it a lot less fun than some of the others. This is Cage at his most restrained, acting like a normal person, and the most bizarre thing about this movie was a villain who was also a carpenter (a long-locked Christopher Eccleston). My silly car flicks of choice are the ultra silly Fast and Furious ones, so sans the lure of The Rock, I found this difficult to get into. The whole “now he has to return to car theft and steal 50 cars!” didn’t feel that engaging, but I know it’s exactly some people’s medicine. 

Rating: 2.5/10 - Not my thing, but I appreciate its place in film as a whole. Weirdly paced and not particular compelling. We did spend a chunk of it brainstorming choose-your-own-adventure erotica, which was probably the best part.

Yo but can we talk about how Killian must have felt to find out that not only did his father try to replace his sons with Liam.2 - but that the only son he tried to replace was Liam?? And how Killian probs felt deep down that Liam was better anyway??

But the thing is, Liam is the only one that needed replacing. Why? Oh, because Killian killed him. And the mere fact that there’s a Liam.2 is like his father knows that somehow, like he’s reminding Killian of what he did.

And yeah, Liam’s the good one. Liam is the best one, Liam rose up from their shitty childhood and he was the epitome of good form, he was honorable and kind and refused to believe the worst of people and he died because Killian failed to save him, and Killian, what did he do then? Why, he turned his back on everything again, he became a criminal and he thought it was the right thing to do but he became like his father. And he just kept getting worse, what he did to Bae - he is his father, he is Hook and he hates himself and then here’s this Liam.2 in his face, the name a reminder of everything he once wanted to be, of everything that’s forever lost.

So it’s not like the lack of Killian.2 is something to mourn. No, it’s probably better there is no Killian.2, it would probably have been better if there was no Killian or at least a better one, someone different. But this Liam, he doesn’t deserve what original Liam got, he doesn’t deserve what Killian got, he doesn’t deserve any of this and so Killian tells himself he’s doing him a favor killing their father. He tells himself he’s doing this for the right reasons, that it’s not just motivated by his own hatred and betrayal, his rage and his love - this is justice, just like it will be when he finally catches his Crocodile, this is defending someone who can’t defend himself, who doesn’t know he has to defend himself.

And Liam.2 will never know. That’s - Liam.2 will never go through what Liam did, and that’s so important, even if he utterly hates that they share the same name, even if every single thing about this situation makes him want to vomit and he does, later, when he’s alone and no one can see his weakness. Because he’s not weak, not anymore - he can’t be, Killian was and Killian was cast aside, he was never good enough when it counted, he lost everything including himself, all that’s left is Hook, and for Hook it was easy to kill his father. It felt like the right thing to do. Liam.2 will cry, will grow up hating the man who took his father from him, will grow up alone, but even so he will grow up better.

So Killian, Hook tells himself he doesn’t care, that being sick was just a result of drinking too much and washes out his mouth with some more, focuses back on his revenge, leaves his past behind him because he’s done all he can. He’s past the old fear of being his father, now - he’s turned into something much, much worse, but if that’s how it has to be to get his revenge then that is how it will be.

Let Liam.2 grow up hating him. It seems fitting, in a way - original Liam would hate what he’s become too, would not recognize him any more than Hook does whenever he looks in a mirror. No, he walks away from that patricide mourning too many deaths, despite all he tells himself about not caring anymore - Liam.2′s innocence, Liam, his father and what his father never was, Milah always and neverending, and - now, more obvious than ever before, Killian Jones.
