…. letting music back in…
Staying up late in the summertime and seeing the sun brightening the sky at 4.30 am now always reminds me of my time working for Disney.
When I worked for The Disney Store, both as a Manager and a regular Cast Member, sometimes it was required of us to be in by 6 am. In fact, we had shifts rolling every single weekday, from 6 am to 2 pm, because we needed to have deliveries made every single weekday.
But the delivery shifts (6-14) during the summertime were sacred and highly sought after. No one wanted to do delivery during winter because where I live, the sun rises at 8-9 am and goes down around 3-4 pm during winter, so it legitimately sucked if you had to get up before 5 am to go to work.
But during summer? Oh, those were the days.
I loved having delivery shifts during summer, I would get up at 4.30-5 am depending on my mood, and I would be at work by 6 am.
We would take in the pallets of products and either carry them downstairs to the stockroom or stage them, depending on what was needed. The further I got with the company, the more responsibility I got, and thus, the less physical labor I actually had to do.
By the time I was at my prime as a Lead Cast Member, I was also a Visual Merchandiser, which meant I was wholly in charge of the delivery shifts when put on them, and was in charge of telling every single person where the products should go, who should do what, and how the entire shift was supposed to go.
It was amazing. For some ridiculous reason, being at work at 6 am became fun. I would have my routines, like checking the shift schedule beforehand so I would know who was on for the day. That determined whether I would meet said people at the train station or at the store. Either way, I would always get a coffee I could bring in, and after delegating everything and telling everyone what to do with each product, I would get to decide where everything went and how it would be displayed. I also got the joy of stressing over whether we would get the job done in time, or not. And I felt important, because every single person would ask me for advice or guidance any time they had to do something slightly outside of their comfort zone.
At the time, I didn't appreciate it. Sometimes I hated how stressful it could be.
But now, getting into my final year of law school, the store being closed for almost five years at this point, I fucking miss it.
I miss getting up at 5 am, knowing I would be off at 2 pm and get to sit in the sun and drink beer with my coworkers. I miss being in charge. I miss knowing every single product we had in store, and knowing every single trivia known to man about the characters we spoke about. I miss speaking to guests, I miss bringing magical moments to life.
My entire apartment is littered with clues of my past. Disney is all over it. And sometimes, someone will ask, "hey, what's the deal?"
And I get to tell them.
I get to tell them about this wonderfully agonizing time of my life, where I lived and breathed for the Walt Disney Company, but that they ultimately cast us all aside for profit.
And I get to tell them that I still adore many sides of the company, but not as many as I used to.
They'll notice the full-sized Captain America shield on my wall, and I get to tell them about how I used to love Chris Evans but now I'm really more into Sebastian Stan, and did you watch Thunderbolts? It was fantastic. Did you watch the new Cap movie? I had to boycott it due to Israeli propaganda but I love Sam Wilson, they really did him dirty, and did you hear about RDJ returning to the MCU for Doomsday? I don't know how I feel, it'll never be as good as it used to be, but maybe part of it will be okay.
And that's how everything feels, these days.
Because the bond I share with the people I used to work with was a soulmate connection and trauma bonding at its finest levels. We lived and breathed for that store, for ten years. And they yanked it away for profit.
And I'll never forgive them for that.
But i'll also never, ever, forget what it felt like to be part of something so significant yet insignificant at the same time.
Sketches of some of the most common situations at work. Gotta draw my frustrations away😬
