He doesn’t know her that well - thinks he must’ve only said maybe a handful of words to her specifically before now, honestly - but he knows that Dylan (Lebi, he has got to start getting used to that) is fond of her already, and that’s good enough for him to not be too disappointed when it’s Scherzzo alone that he finds.

He’s about to break the silence and let her know he’s there, but then before he has a chance she turns and seems to start just a little at the sight of him, and he can’t help but feel a bit guilty.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to...” Startle you, is what he wants to say, but he just trails off instead. He’s not sure she’ll appreciate him pointing that out.

“i’m not interested.” 

although he hadn’t exactly said the words GO AWAY, they still hung in the air, an unspoken shield between him and the other lost. he wasn’t interested in really being one of them- he was focusing on figuring a way to get out of this (not that any of it was working).

he wasn’t that used to being around kids his own age for so long. sure, he was surrounded by them at school, but he’d never been the type to actively seek out friendships from them, not since he was a kid, not since everything changed. he didn’t have time (despite how much his dad insisted he should) and he didn’t really care. there were a few people he’d talk to on occasion, but he was too busy trying to keep on top of things.

responsibility was what he was used to, and this newfound freedom that so many of them had embraced was so new to him (and quite frankly, terrified him). he supposed he could easily join in, but that would be pointless, futile- time he could have spent on figuring out a way to get home (what would happen to his dad, to millie?)

it was easier to stick to a plan, to steal food and leave it for them (they had no idea it was him doing it and he intended to keep it that way, although he wasn’t sure why) and get on with his own stuff. still, time enough had passed and he was beginning to doubt that he would ever get home (so maybe, why shouldn’t he loosen up a bit. protesting, for one, wouldn’t exactly hurt his cause).
