And so!!! I made myself a bowl of the chashu-tomato yummies, and topped it with fake eggplant "eel"!!

And it was very good!!! But I still felt like it was missing something, so I added a labneh ball:

...Sadly, it continues to be the case that I cannot actually hand you a bowl of this. But... you can make yourself one. See, making an impromptu meal improvised entirely out of leftovers like this one isn't so hard to do if you have basic cooking knowledge and a rough idea of what things smell and taste like. But in order to get that knowledge, you have to smell and taste a lot of things. Sometimes you'll have to smell and taste the things you don't initially like more than once just so that your body gets used to them. I've grown to enjoy lots of things I didn't like initially over the years. One thing, for example, was raw tomatoes. Couldn't fucking stand them. But I kept trying them in little ways – dicing them up and putting them on tacos, trying them at various stages of being cooked, and stuff like that. The trick is to try them in ways that your body doesn't find overwhelming. Eventually my body got the idea that they're not poisonous and they're not gonna kill me. And now they're one of the foods I enjoy most.

As for getting cooking knowledge... there's really nothing for it but trying things and failing sometimes. I do believe I told you about that one time I tried to melt a whole brie together with mashed berries, and it didn't work out and I had to throw the whole thing away because the ammonia flavor from the rind got into everything, making it unsalvageable. Stuff like that will happen. And then you learn, so it's okay. Sometimes the cost of a lesson is ingredients. And then you know a little more and try again later.

...Life in general is a lot like that, actually. You try stuff and see what sticks. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't, and you don't beat yourself up over it, because the only constant in this universe, besides change, is “obstacles”, “mistakes”, and “difficulties”. They're supposed to teach you to use your creative brain and be resourceful, not to teach you that you're stupid or unprepared, and definitely not to act as signs of fate or destiny or whatever.

...There's no such thing, you know. “Fate”, “destiny”, or any of that stuff. All's it does is keep you in a state of learned helplessness. You decide what to do with the abilities and resources at your disposal. When obstacles come up, you decide whether or not to ask for help and whether or not to give up. Nothing is written in stone. Even time, gravity, and space are relative.

After I made and ate the snacks, I got a fuckton of dishes done (holy cow, they needed doing!), and then after that, I breathed life into today's wishes for ya:

Which, of course, meant that we had to take down the cat-proofing fencing that J and I built. Because technically, we're not supposed to have anything attached to the fence (some parts of it were held down by zip tie or string), and we're technically not supposed to have anything up that would obstruct the opening of the back gate. Which is weird, because we're supposed to be the only ones who use it.

...So... in order to avoid a fine, we took the gate down. Had to dismantle the whole thing because the green netting is a bit too stiff to put away neatly. So we had to chop the green netting into lots of little bitty pieces, and...

...My upbringing being what it was, part of me (as ridiculous as this is gonna sound) worried that maybe the fence might think we're chopping it up because it did a bad job, and... I got kinda sad. Yes, I know that it's an inanimate object, that it neither feels nor thinks, but ya know... hyperempathy is a thing, and it's something I deal with so... it is what it is.

...The fence was amazing. We built it and it was ours, and it withstood time, weather, and the various escape attempts of our cats. It will be sorely missed. We had to dismantle it only because our HOA is... honestly more than a little invasive and controlling. Like... they get weird and levy fines even about what sorts of things are visible in your windows. Even if those things are innocuous things like unused mattresses. They control what color your door can be, what kinds of windows you're allowed to have, what kinds of holiday decorations you're allowed to have up and when, and more. You're not supposed to work on your car in the lot – even basic things like putting air in your tires or changing the oil. It all seems rather bizarre, arbitrary, and micromanagey.

...Basically, the outside of the house is supposed to look as barren and lifeless as they like to keep the lawns here.

...But it's all right. Once the privacy fence is “resealed” or whatever, we're just gonna put up a new cat barrier. And maybe with the experience of building the last one under our belt, we'll build an even better one this time. Root for us, okay?

Pictures of the cat-barrier-less backyard will have to wait until tomorrow, though; it was pretty dark by the time J and I were through with taking it down. It looks... kinda sad back there without it, actually. And some of the native plants got knocked over while we worked, too. I can only assume that when they come back there to reseal it, they're gonna knock down even more of them; native plants are considered “weeds” in places like this. They'd be more careful if I had purposely planted begonias or something, I'm sure. But it's all just milkweed and ivy, which in my opinion is prettier and more useful than begonias, but... other, more “normal” people don't think the same...

...We'll fix it afterwards. Don't you worry. Anything broken can be repaired. Anything defiled can be made sacred again. Anything destroyed can be rebuilt. Things are resilient like that. Nothing bad ever has to be permanent. And nothing good has to succumb permanently to any bad thing if we're willing to put in the effort to either maintain or rebuild. Things can be frustrating and difficult, and failure and success move in cycles, but nothing is ever hopeless in the grand scheme of things.

Suppose it's time to get ready for bed. How in the world is it almost 10pm already? I feel like I only did like 2 things today. Bleh. Oh well.

I hope you know I'm thinking about you pretty much all the time, wishing you were here to eat the yummy things and to do fun stuff with me.
