Got back from a cat trapping. Meet Angelique and her three babies, Francois, May, and Juliet.
I finally have achieved what I was waiting for: all three kittens, safe in my basement, ready to be dropped off for spay/neuter tomorrow morning. I picked up big poppa and brought in the mystery cat this morning, only to discover that the mystery cat was already ear tipped and I accidentally brought them in for no reason. Lesson learned: check your cats in daylight. I returned them and big poppa to the backyard this afternoon. Then I halfheartedly set two of three traps with wet food, not expecting anything. At 6:30, I went to check and found Nessie in one trap, Yeti in the other, and Sasquatch loose in the shed. I quickly grabbed my third trap and was able to pick Sasquatch up and drop him in. He didn’t care at all and got wet food for his trouble. Sorry for the terrible quality photos: trapped kittens are hard to photograph.
Imagine being born under a construction site, your mom being hit by a car, be seen by a strange girl that calls you “Dawn” and leaves food out for you and looks for you when you go missing for a day, only to then go get food and get trapped even though you've gotten food there before and not gotten trapped.
And now that autistic girl is calling you “Dawn” and “Baby” and your in her garage and she gave you this thing called “wet food” which is really good and she's trying to get you used to people and you don't want any of it, and she offered you this “catnip” as a peace offering but its not as good as the wet food. At least she isn't forcing her way into your cage and she's left you alone except to give food, toys, and water. But every so often she sits out there with a book or sits there and talks to you.
You have a feeling this girl really wants to get closer and befriend you but is worried about going too fast, also you feel you aren't the first kitten she's kidnapped from the streets.
I want to love Dawn, they just aren't ready for love yet. Also the quarantine crate is being washed and dried before moving Dawn into it, the carrier isn't perminate, and they'll have a litter box and more room in the crate. And be allowed inside after quarantine
But for now Dawn is just a spicy baby who is learning what cat food is and also soon going to learn what a vet is
One of the things shows and movies don't show you is just how awkward it feels to walk around with a flashlight, food, and water calling out for a missing animal. Like the anxiety of not only finding them but also other people just seeing you walk around and shining a flashlight everywhere.
Day two of the search for Dawn. No spottings on the trail cameras, not that I'm surprised, they didn't pick her up yesterday when she stood right in front of them eating. There was a sighting down the road at 8am, by the time I had gotten there she wasn't there anymore and we couldn't hear her. I spent an hour calling out and checking the traps and food bowls nearby, nothing.
I was hopeful since yesterday she was in the backyard but got scared off by a race, but even after that she was heard or seen by multiple neighbors. I worry about her being out there alone, she doesn't know her name, she doesn't really like people, when we got her it was because her mom was hit by a car on our street. Its a busy road and we also have a lot of forest nearby. I worry she might see the same fate as her mom or get taken by the natural predators we have in the woods.
I searched off and on most of today in the forest, on a few different streets. I just finished for tonight its almost 9pm, I didn't want to stop looking but its dark, I'm sunburnt, and I'm exhausted. I hope that since she hasn't been seen or heard most of today and she hasn't been to any food bowls that she got lucky and someone that doesn't know I'm looking for her found her and took her home.
I'm glad I live in a place where most of my neighbors are friendly and have helped keep an eye and ear out or don't mind me leaving food and water bowls in their backyards and searching in them. I just hope Dawn is safe and alive.
Its very awkward to be searching and see someone walk up and ask what I'm doing, or to see people and worry that they're gonna overhear, as if they'll be unhappy that they overheard someone searching for a lost cat. Its awkward explaining to people that I'm walking around with a bag of food, bottle of water, and a flashlight because I'm looking for a lost kitten. Also because Dawn is fully grey they ask what she looks like and the description is “Very small, medium length gray fur, yellow eyes”.
I hope she comes back soon, someone finds her soon, or someone has found her and took her home. If the last one is the case I’ll miss her but I hope she gets a good life. I just wish I had worked on trying to trap her more or teach her what her name was at least. She might've been a cat I was trying to catch but she never disappeared for long, especially since her mom was hit she stuck around under the porch a lot more.
I might be wasting my energy on a cat I don't even own, but I'm doing it because I was already trying to catch her and get her a good home. The outside is dangerous for cats, and if she isn't fixed she could continue the cycle, plus cats are an invasive species technically so its better to catch her and give her the life of an indoor cat or an indoor cat with a catio then let her outside where she faces all different risks and poses a risk to wildlife.
I hope Dawn is safe.
Trying to trap kittens and their mama. I caught their dumb dad three times. Next time, I'm taking him to his humans. In the trap.
