The parking lot wall of Carson Place Comic Shop is decorated by a mural that is dominated by a black and yellow spider. The tagline at the bottom states, “A Thing Is Beautiful Because It Is Beautiful.”
Security lighting for the parking lot, as well as street lamps, illuminate the mural well enough for me to get some good pictures. While I’m occupied with this, two young women, likely students from the local college, pass by. One woman wears a halter top and blue jeans, the other a t-shirt paired with a short black skirt. The one in the black skirt drifts along the sidewalk, then falls into some bushes. Her friend tries to help her up, but the woman on the ground pushes her away.
“I’m fine,” she slurs, “I can get up by myself.”
“You’re drunk, let me help you,” her friend says.
“I can do it,” the woman says from the ground. She awkwardly gets up to her feet. “See, I told you.”
The two of them continue down the road, enjoying their youth and solid bone density. If I fell like that, I’d probably break a rib.
I walk by St. Paul’s Church. The parking lot is full of men and women wearing everything from suits and ties to t-shirts and sweatpants. The midnight service has just ended, and they are hugging their goodbyes. On the church lawn, a sign reads, “Is God Good? Yes, He Is!!”
As I get to the corner, I see a crumpled up cigarette packet sitting in a puddle of water. The puddle reflects an image of the street light above. I take several pictures, attempting to capture this mirror-like effect at the best angle.
A young man wearing a football jersey walks by, sees what I am doing, and asks, “Why are you taking a picture of that?”
I answer, “Because it’s beautiful in its own way.”
