headcanon that while all three members of the goose family have somewhat morbid senses of Games-humor as a coping mechanism Peeta is by farrrr the worst
would Katniss and Peeta have highly complicated views of guns/weapons at all postwar? yes. do I still enjoy the image of one of them, absolutely the most fed up, standing on their porch with an unloaded hunting rifle to fend off celebrity stalkers and paparazzi, telling them to “kindly get the hell off my lawn” in a heavy southern accent? also yes.
two post war headcanons:
Peeta has his prosthesis, of course, but there’s a very real fatigue from wearing it, and so he also has crutches and a cane he uses, and at first the cane is a simple metal one but eventually he gets a wood one carved with beautiful floral and ivy designs
Katniss’s repaired ear isn’t permanently repaired and over time, her hearing starts to deteriorate again in that one, so she gets a hearing aid because there’s no way she’s letting someone perform surgery on her again, and she and Peeta also learn a form of sign language to supplement it
no thoughts just Katniss and Peeta dancing by candlelight as autumn rain pours and wind whistles softly outside
Not to go all horny anon on you but sometimes I remember all the Yearning Katniss did throughout Mockingjay and then all the pining Peeta has done for Katniss since he was 5 and I must conclude that they’re not leaving the bedroom for like 3 days post “so after”. Too much love and pining and repression being let out. Katniss’s answer of “real” is just going to amplify it for both of them.
oh no I am absolutely here for this, anon; they had the equivalent of a proper honeymoon after “so after” and I mean so much occasionally desperate, always tender, and probably lightly amused and awkward love making (and also having a snack and hydrating and having baths and maybe playing some games (cards? chess? tic tac toe?) at intervals)
Katniss’ daddy being good to her is something so personal to me. Him taking her hunting, rocking her to sleep when she was way over the age of kids being rocked (such as, after Prim was born and also being rocked to sleep), him laying down with her at night so she doesn’t fall asleep alone while her mother is caring for Prim, making her a baby bow, teaching her to swim and turning getting food into a game, her riding on his shoulders and then singing together.
Katniss’s deep love for her father is so, so touching and special, and it tells you, I think, how good of a man he was, how much he loved his little girl 😭 (all his girls!) (my main consolation in Prim’s death is that she’s with her Daddy again)
no thoughts except PTA mama!katniss who carries around a (comically large, in comparison to herself) backpack so she can keep snacks and juice boxes for the kids - as well as a first aid kit, of course, because you know she’s super attentive like that. the little ones trust her implicitly and peeta jokes that everytime he sees her volunteering she has a random kid stuck to her hip.
ps. i hope you feel better real soon 🥺
Mrs. M who always has delicious baked goods and always tends scrapes and bumps so tenderly, and who always has interesting facts about nature, and who sings like an angel … children ADORE her, regardless of what parents might think, and her scars and sometimes sad eyes never unnerves them, because who could be unnerved by the lady in the red dress with the long braid who always smells of cinnamon and pine, and who gives the best hugs?
I think now is a good time to say that I picture the “you love me?” question being whispered softly into a room lit by a single oil lamp, with Peeta’s thumb softly tracing Katniss’s bottom lip as he poses the question, and with their bare legs twined under the sheets, both feeling slightly shy about what they’ve just done, but never too shy for the familiar closeness, and after she meets his eyes and murmurs “real” as his hand drifts to lightly caress her cheek, she goes faintly pink and scoots a little closer and tucks her head under his chin so she can hide from her feelings while simultaneously being very open about them, and he laughs and holds her closer and strokes her back and she smirks a little and kisses his chest and tells him to stop teasing her and he says he can’t, but he loves her anyway, and she gives a happy sigh to hear it, and rain patters on the window and they’re content
