Part 1 of 1 million of me trying to get everyone to read catechism
Wacky fantasy adventure old movie meets double reverse isekai AU
In other words, nothing makes sense but it’s ok!
The goals were to mash whatever idea I have into a somewhat coherent story (more like… a visual trailer of one? idk) while preserving Catechism flowy visual style and symbols🦋
Btw there’re references to two movies here~ and also!! to this wonderful song — “My lover behind closed eyes”, performed by “Paper nights”!!
also catechismblr, could we try to all use the tag “catechism comic” on our posts? This way we can avoid scrolling through a bunch of Christian & theology stuff when we want to see the blorbos, please
Every single panel in this comic is such a work of art! The way the air, the subject of the text, is the only thing breaking the panels, showing how it transcends the in-universe world to be part of the text! Each panel establishes a different scene, but they all appear very cohesive because of the presence of smoke! The contrast between the swirling smoke, the round text bubbles, and the sharp, square panels all contrast each other, foreshadowing the class tensions in the country!!! I’m going insane this is gonna be so good gah!!!!!!
These two panels as a very literal representation of the interaction between audience and story. We (the audience) are the young storyteller, peaking into a world different from our own. The shadow puppets are the characters, and their simplified style is showing how their lives are twisted and simplified over time. This idea is compounded by the fact that these are only seen in shadow, meaning we only see the darkest sides of what’s going on. This murky view of reality parallels the different perspectives on the country held by the people watching and putting on the show:
And this lack of clarity is outright said in one of the last pages of the chapter:
The comic does such a good job of keeping track of little thematic threads in the few chapters out!!!!
Oh this is going to hurt me deeply. I cannot wait.
