8. What would it take for them to break up?
their arrangement is transactional. pleasure for pleasure, or resources for pleasure. sometimes catface wants new gear and waleran provides- so if those terms were broken, then that's that. (theoretically. waleran sometimes finds ways to not grant him much-needed gear that catface would use in his fight for the earldom.)
also if catface ever found out about waleran's involvement with earlscastle... well, a break up would be the kind way to put it.
9. How do they feel about each other's exes and people who flirt with them? Is jealousy an issue in general?
waleran has never been with anyone before catface, and he doesn't much care who he's been with. he'd just rather not hear about where catface's dick has been. BUT. if there's anyone waleran is jealous of? it's earl bartholomew. the almost fanatic loyalty he displays for the dead earl... no matter how much he has of catface, he will never have the stuff of chivalric romances.
12. Do they argue often? About what?
sometimes waleran tries to stiff him when it comes to matters of money and resources, and that's when catface starts trying to fight him lol.
13. Are there any regrets or unresolved issues between them?
oh PLANY. when catface eventually got hitched to a woman later on, he had become so used to the thrill of fighting and secret rendezvous that he'd found himself wanting something more.
over the years, i don't think waleran will ever get over the fact that he has no control over catface leaving first. first to leave their initial tryst without a word when they were young, first to shut the door in waleran's face when he finds out about earlscastle... between all this and shiring turning on him, umm. no wonder he's got an ever lingering abandonment issue.
frankly, a lot of things post-canon. waleran's downfall leaves him a shell of his former self, and he becomes a weird sad recluse in his family's home that very much seeps into his interactions with a now-older and more guarded catface. waleran regrets being caught in his lies and losing god's favour to philip more than he regrets doing awful things... but he does regret what he did to catface. meanwhile, catface still hates his guts for killing the man that mattered to him the most, but he's simply Tired. and you know what they say about old habits.
catface does pass away first, and though it gives waleran the deadline he needs to finally reckon with his guilt and feelings, he never really gets over it.
14. What's an opinion they'll never agree on? How do they deal with that?
they lead very different lifestyles (though they agree on the hedonism) and keep such vastly different company... tons of things they won't agree on frankly. but thir relationship is built on one mutual interest: sucking and fucking. that makes up for almost all of it.
15. Do they have doubts about each other? Are those doubts well-founded or exaggerated?
OHH they very much acknowledge that the other person is an insufferable piece of shit. catface is a drunken, irresponsible lout, and waleran is a shady rich cunt. they're right to squint at each other.
16. How much do they actually trust each other? Was their trust ever broken? Can it be mended
not very much in general, but yes in a way! waleran and catface wouldn't trust each other in the public settings of their lives. catface knows waleran is a two-faced snake and approaches their interactions with this in mind, but it's ok because he's just here for a good time. in particular he doesn't trust waleran's dealings with william- it is honestly his biggest issue with him, but regardless they both hold a disdain for the lad and do make it a hobby to shittalk him, lol.
but they do trust each other's discretion when it comes to their relationship, at the very least. they trust that the other is keeping their emotional distance (hint: they're slipping).
of course, the revelation happens, and this completely breaks whatever trust and good will they had between each other. catface is convinced waleran is an irredeemable piece of shit, and waleran is convinced that catface just. well. chose Wrong. things remain broken for more than a decade before they meet again, and they very slowly rebuild this trust.
17. Is there a secret that they don't dare tell the other? Why? Will they ever say it?
Catface feels he has nothing to hide from Waleran. Waleran doesn't make it a secret that he's a bloodthirsty, power-hungry hound, but he certainly doesn't want catface to know what he did with Earlscastle. waleran never tells him, but catface finds out from walter anyways- and in a hazy broiling rage he tries to strangle him as they lay together. normal reaction to have for a normal secret
