Fluff with Race?
You woke up this morning to every newsie in the Lodging House singing Happy Birthday to you. It was your birthday! You were so excited! You were one of those people who loved their birthday, and you couldn’t wait to spend the day with your boyfriend, Race.
But Race was nowhere to be found in the Lodging House this morning. You didn’t let that bother you too much though, as you figured he went early to save you a good spot in the line for papers. You put on one of your favorite outfits and did your hair exactly how you like it and you happily went off to get your papes.
But Race wasn’t already in line. Luckily, the other newsies let you cut in front of them. It was your birthday after all. But you were discouraged. Where was Race?
You arrived at your favorite selling spot in a slightly worse mood, and your mood got even worse throughout the day. Several newsies stopped by to wish you a happy birthday, but none of them were Race.
“Happy birthday, Y/N!”
“Thanks, Specs.”
“Are you alright? You look a little down.”
“It’s just…Have you seen Race today?”
“I’ve seen him running around town. Have you not seen him?”
“Nope. And he knows it’s my birthday. I’ve only been talking about it for the last month.”
“Well, I’m sure he’ll stop by soon. Bye, Y/N, see you later!”
And then you were alone. You finished selling your papers around 1:00, as usual, and you didn’t really know what to do. You had assumed you’d have lunch with Race. You were about to leave when a pair of arms wrapped around you from behind. You screamed obviously.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Y/N!!”
“Racetrack Higgins, don’t scream in my ear! Where have you been all day?”
“Oh, just putting together a few surprises for you. It is your birthday, sweetheart.”
“Well alright. Take me to lunch.”
“Okay, okay, princess.”
He took to you to the park, where a blanket and a basket filled with your favorite foods were waiting. Albert and Romeo were sitting there guarding the food, and when you walked over they wished you happy birthday and left. You were so grateful to sit down and relax as Race fixed all the food for you. It was so delicious and you were so surprised that Race knew exactly how you liked everything.
Next you went for a walk around the park. You were lucky that it was such a nice day. Race kept dancing around and making jokes and just being himself. He had pretty made up for not being there this morning already.
“Okay, now we’re gonna go back to Lodging House because we should probably change into something a little nicer and I want to drop off this basket.”
So off to the Lodging House you went. You changed into the nicest outfit you had while Race was getting ready.
“So we’re gonna go to the moving pictures now. I won some tickets off someone at Sheepshead.”
“Really? You know I’ve been wanting to go for forever.”
“Yeah, but we better hurry because we’re almost late.”
So you ran all the way to theatre and still somehow had time to buy some popcorn. The movie was amazing. You had never seem anything like it before and Race seem to enjoy it just as much as you did. You never wanted the film to end.
You walked out of the theatre holding onto Race’s arm and you were so happy. You didn’t think he could possibly do anything more to make your day better. BUt you were wrong.
“Alright now let’s go to dinner.”
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
Race walked you all the way to this cute little Italian place where there was already a table for two waiting with a candle. Race told you to order whatever you wanted, and he still had enough money to pay for everything. He must have been saving for months. It was the best food you had ever had.
“Okay, now this is for you,” he said, handing you a little box.
“Anthony, you really didn’t have to. This day has been perfect already,”
“Just open the box, okay?”
So you opened it. Inside was a little heart locket on a chain. You opened the locket to find a little hand-drawn picture of the two of you.
“Race this is beautiful. Where did you get the picture?”
“I asked Jack to draw a picture of us. Now I can always be with you, no matter where you are.”
“Would you put it on for me?”
“Of course, my angel.”
So he walked over to your side of the table and clipped the locket around your neck. He kissed the top of your head after he finished.
“I love you so much, Y/N.”
“I love you too, Racetrack Higgins.”
