Back to my beloved Bucky, this line made me think of Coney Island and how beautiful it is from the pictures I saw on internet (and how much I want to see the Brooklyn skyline from the Wonder Wheel). I HAD to write for 40's Bucky in a happy AU, I love and mourn him everyday.
The title is inspired by "A Sky Full Of Stars" by Coldplay.

BUCKY BARNES MASTERLIST || JANUARY JUMBLE SCRIBBLES MASTERLIST
Coney Island was less bright than Bucky remembered. The neighbourhood's once joyful atmosphere was a distant memory, erased by the hardships of war.
As he walked with you, hand in hand, his mind went back to the 1930s. He remembered all the time he and Steve used to spend their meager savings to reach Coney Island, where the air was filled with the smell of saltwater, popcorn and sweets, and laughter. He remembered eating Nathan's corn dogs and trying to win a prize for a girl — Dorothy, perhaps? Or Dottie? — a giant teddy bear just to impress her. He also remembered when Bucky and Steve tried the Cyclone, with Steve throwing up after surviving its hellish ride.
Yet, the War was ended, lights were dimmer, people's smile didn't reach their ears like a decade ago.
It changed everything, even a place as vibrant as Coney Island.
Nevertheless, your spirit remained undamped, and you dragged him along with you to every fairground ride and stall, full of enthusiasm. He promised you a romantic date once the War was over, and he did his best to keep his promise.
Now, you were both sitting side by side on the Wonder Wheel, holding hands as you watched the Brooklyn's skyline painting a pitch-black sky like many stars scattered throughout space.
'James, look!' you squealed, pointing at the horizon. Your eyes sparkled like a child's in a toy shop.
But Bucky didn't look at the skyline.
He looked into your eyes, memorising how they crinkled when you smiled, how they sparkled when you received flowers, and how they filled with tears when you both said goodbye.
On nights when he couldn't sleep, he would look up and imagine those same eyes among the stars. clinging to your memory as if it were a ray of light amidst a future that was so bloody and uncertain. He believed that somehow, no matter how far away you were, your memory would never fade.
And now that he had them in front of him again, he had never seen a sky as beautiful as this one.

The Howlies being out on a mission in the middle of nowhere, walking, and Bucky (who lives and breathes for music and dancing, you can’t change my mind.) starts singing or whistling out of nowhere We’re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz and all of the others just trying so hard to get him him to shut up or laughing at how inappropriate for the situation it is or saying shit like Nazis not being anything like Wizards. And basically just some Howling Commandos fluff (which they probably didn’t get very often because circumstances).

It was supposed to be happier, but something changed during the writing. I’m sorry-

When Bucky told you he was drafter for the war, you collapsed.
Your body was shaking like a fragile leaf, sighs and sobs leaving your trembling lips like hurtful prays, your heart dull for the pain and your mind already picturing a world where he was no longer there.
Bucky was quick to scoop you in his arms, rubbing gently the small of your back, pressing his lips against your forehead and whispering soothing words, about how he would always reply to your letters and how he would do everything in his power to come back home from you.
But his words were just muffling sounds in your ears.
The last day of Bucky as a free man were a pure torture: he brought you and Steve to "the future", an exposition made by Howard Stark about technology and progress, something his nerdy mind would love.
You were 't able to enjoy it. Watching that uniform perfectly fit his body, carrying his cocky grin while looking at people, carrying that confidence of a man who truly want to serve his country… It was too much for you.
Yet, the truth was that Bucky was afraid. He didn't have a choice to approve or refuse.
But he had to be strong, for both of you.
He showed his weaknesses during your last night together, bodies joined together as the lovemaking both consumed you, the air of you room smelling of sweat and lust.
When the climax finally consume you both, Bucky tried to pull himself out and allow you a moment of respite. But your slender arms blocked him.
“Don’t move," you cried, bringing him close, "I want to feel this. One last time, give me a pleasant memory of us."
And Bucky obeyed, keeping close to you as you were about to vanish forever, whispering how much he loved you and couldn't wait to marry you when the war was over.
The following morning, he was gone.
And before the end of the war, he was gone forever.
