Motifs in The Catcher in the Rye
1. Is the motif a noun? verb? adjective? Adjective 2. How does it come up in the novel, and how does it impact what is going on? What happens immediately preceding or immediately following a mention or discussion of this motif? When he is mad or annoyed and wants to insult someone. 3. What is the mood when this idea or thing is brought up? Would you associate this with times when Holden is content? frightened? frantic? confused? Is this mood consistent with every incidence of this motif? The mood which holden is sin when he uses it is if he is mad or exasperated and wants to let everyone know that he is angry and thinks he is better than the rest. 4. Is Holden alone when this motif occurs? If not, with whom is he interacting? How would you characterize that interaction? Does this motif occur both when he is alone and when he is with other people? Is there a connection to be made? Holden is not alone when he uses the motif because he is obviously mad at someone and wants to express it in some way. he is interacting in a very nasty way by insulting and not giving people the chance to say otherwise. no only when he is with other people. 5. What does this motif tell you about Holden, in a “big picture” way - Does this suggest anything about his personality? His weaknesses or strengths? His sense of himself? yes, this motif is very reflective about holdens way to live and his moods because he is saying this because he is very defensive and doesn't want anybody to know that he really is vulnerable and he thinks he is better than the rest so he uses this in his advantage. 6. Tie it all together: Did any pattern emerge? Pick out other words or ideas used in conjunction with this motif. Look back on your investigation and come up with a single sentence that sums up what you’ve discovered. Write three or four more sentences supporting your thesis sentence. Use references from the novel, and form an opinion of your own. I think that a pattern did emerge because every time he was mad with someone or he felt that he was being attacked he used this word and he also wanted to insult people that he wasn't so fond of and that is where holden starts to use the word moron. sometimes holden just uses it as a way of calling people but he doesn't realize that it affects people and they don't like it.
Paragraph
Moron in The Catcher in the Rye is a motif that the author likes to use most of the time. There are patterns when it comes to his moods and the way he uses it and when he uses it and that is what the author tries to do. When he is in an angry mood he uses the motif and when he is not he docent. He uses it in for example she he is leaving the school he shouts back at all the kids "See you later morons" and then he leaves or he uses moron a lot against Akley and his room mate.
