A day trip to the beautiful Rottnest Island or Rotto as it's locally known (the Aussies like to shorten most words and put an 'o' at the end. We took a ferry from Fremantle, a 30 minute direct journey which drops you off at Thompson Bay on the island. I wasn't sure what to expect as a few locals we have chatted to had mentioned it's a lovely island but has become a tourist trap over the years with ferry prices and the cost of push bikes trebling. Admittedly the ferries were packed out with it being a saturday during peak season. However, as soon as we walked away from the harbour and the nearby beaches, it was clear we had arrived on a beautiful island. The no car policy on the island was a welcome break and despite wanting to rent push bikes, we decided to explore the island on foot. We visited several beaches during the day with Catherine Bay being my personal favourite closely followed by Longreach bay which is nestle in a cove looking out to the light house. As we wandered around the island we saw lots of quokkas which look a little bit like a really small wallaby. Sociable little things! We would have liked to have stayed on the island for a few nights but every where was booked up so we will be planning a return visit. Some advice to those visiting Rottenest island. Take seasickness tablets because the ferry rides are VERY choppy!
