Catholic Action @ Nice N Sleazy’s
I’m sure Catholic Action would thank their supports The Van T’s and The Bellybuttons for wetting the crowds appetite before they hit the stage at Sleazy’s on Thursday night. Their highly anticipated hometown performance definitely didn’t disappoint.
Catholic Actions symbolic cling clang sound, unique vocals, rumbling drums quickly sprung into action with their first song. An audial memo was sent to the audience by frontman Chris ‘By the way, my mum’s here so no swearing’. He said it in a kidding manner but I reckon there was a slice of sincerity in there. The band are unmistakably talented - that’s for sure - with pin point harmonised guitars and triumphantly planting tempo changes giving some tracks a dragged slick smooth feel.
Crowds enthusiastically sang along to their single’s b-side The Wash. “You roll your eyes but the best is yet to come”. Again, that ability to formate a dragging almost blues characteristic was a joy to listen to. Chris was knocking out some amazing glissandos with his vocal performance. They evoke music that is just magical to listen to. I found myself at moments, closing my eyes and just feeling good.
What’s a gig without a good ole reliable heckle... “can you play Wonderwall by Oasis” which was quickly met with a definite “No”.
A packed out Sleazy’s burst into dance and song when L.U.V got its play. Punters enjoyed a jolly jumping session along to the dissonance infused single. The end of the set really showcased the bands diversity with some more minimal playing.
As if the night hadn’t been good enough, Catholic Action popped a juicy sweet cherry on top of the cake closing with ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining’ by Jeff Beck or probably more famously Slade.
With some healthy support from the musical community, surely Catholic Action’s galactic stardom is just around the corner.
