I remember you posting about how Taylor's art would be taken to a new/different level having been in a relationship. This album proved you ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. It was all I could think about listening to the new album. Also your meta a few weeks back really highlighted Archer for me in a new light.

But ahhhh. You’ve no idea how happy this makes me!!! I had such conviction that she wouldn’t lose her layers or her nuance once she’d found love and it’s true that she hasn’t- that it’s deepened and stretched her work in the most incredible and unexpected way. 

I’m so happy you thought of that right away.

i’ve had a weird relationship with that song because I loved it so intensely apart from the album that I had trouble making it fit back into the album but it’s starting to settle in and again and thank you, thank you!!!

4. How has your mindset shifted lately?

I used to be happy all the time and sad rarely and now those ratios are, for the most part, completely flipped but honestly in my better moments that’s not a bad thing. It kind of feels like a miracle that I get to be happy again at all when I was so very sad or upset. And the farther down I was the more amazing it is to me when I come out of it even a little. 

I think of it this way. If I understand that this life is a valley of tears when I see flowers in it it is all the more shocking and amazing.

This answer sounded better in my head before I actually had to answer this question but I do mean it. I am more surprised by good things now and hopefully take them less for granted.

yeah, Babylon 5 is one of the few sci-fi shows that actually deals with religion quite a bit (and not just made-up alien religions but actual real world religions too). it’s also one of the few shows, sci-fi or otherwise, where characters’ religious/spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) are not only acknowledged but treated as an important facet of who they are. in most pieces of media I couldn’t tell you what any of the characters believe, but I have a pretty good idea for the majority of B5 characters - we have Jews, agnostics, Christians, aliens with their own belief systems (and different members of the same species will sometimes have different beliefs, avoiding to some extent a Planet-of-Hats scenario), spiritual but not necessarily religious characters, etc.

the show’s creator is an atheist but treats religion pretty evenhandedly. there are both positive and negative portrayals of it and the way people practice it, and characters aren’t treated as stupid for their faith (the only exception to this is a pretty universally disliked episode called Believers, which is much more... Star Trek, I guess, in its approach to religion, though I did actually enjoy some of the philosophical conversations between Sinclair and Franklin in that ep).

the episode this gifset is from, Passing Through Gethsemane, is very good. it’s not specifically about religion but uses it as a framework to explore issues of forgiveness, accountability, and justice. you could probably watch it as a standalone if you want a taste for the series, because it’s more about the guest cast than the main characters.

It was probably the cataloging system of her girlhood schools making it have emotional resonance as an adult! Also John Dewey was a boss for more than just his library system!

John Dewey seemed like a pretty cool dude! Melvil Dewey, however, was known for being a gigantic dick and raging misogynist.
