Saxophone & drums: free improvised music

Cathy Heyden / Rogier Smal duo (Paris/Amsterdam) play free improvised music with saxophone and drums. Everybody who was there in Koffie5euro last May, when Rogier played with Eugene Chadbourne, knows this is going to be special too. But no vintage porn visuals this time. Win or lose? Decide for yourself.

Cathy Heyden is a saxophone player from Paris. She’s been working her free saxophone playing with a mountain of musicians, dancers and other artists for years. The last years she’s been playing with the crazies from Faust amongst others.

Rogier Smal is a drummer who experiments with free percussion sounds. He plays with different groups, duo's and solo. Lately Rogier has been lucky enough to have been making sonic waves of liberty with gems like: Dylan Carlson, Jaap Blonk, Marshall Allen, Dagora, David Birchall, Eugene Chadbourne, Sunburned hand of the man, Mik Quantius and many more.

Soundartist focusing on manipulating tape based machines

Pauwel de Buck is a Ghent based sound artist. His main focus was on installations, instead of recordings, but he recently released an amazing cassette on Smeltkop. The sounds on 'Tape Your Skin' are mostly created or wrought by manipulating tape based machines. Spooked out synth's, everyday sounds buried in tape hiss and something that sounds either like a 'sick llama' or a self-build instrument with bowed strings. From barely audible to all-in-the red, this is a trip.

First show of their September tours to the UK, Australia and New-Zealand. So you better catch these smelly darlings before they actually get 'good'. " « Putain c'est comme si j'avais entendu le L.A Blues des Stooges dans une version de 30 minutes !!! », commentaire d'un type dans le public cette nuit là dans la salle des fêtes d'une MJC dans la banlieue de Metz. Blast pris dans le ventre, les oreilles qui saignent après cette sonic fest jouée du coté de la free music incandescente comme la jouait les Stooges ou les Blue Humans de Rudolph Grey. Performance indécente de ce duo de freaks Aylerien, Yves Botz sur sa 6 cordes électrique ravagée et Christophe Sorro à cogner ses futs pour leur faire rendre l'âme. La young lady Cathy Heyden en résilles, lèvres maquillant son alto cuivré, les rejoignant pour une danse obscène, pavillon embouché dans les micros de la guitare, larsens fièvreux tournant derviches. Guitare claquée au sol, corps à corps comme dans ses bals de campagne qui dégénèrent, l'ivresse comme ligne de conduite, la tête dans les amplis. Foutu bordel, les amplis in red, volées de décibels balancées au public flirtant trop près de la scène, no escape, le monstre tricéphale à dévorer nos tripes ne fera pas de prisoniers. Voyous magnifiques d'un jazz mort réssucité pour un slow furibond avec l'extrême noise terror en habit. Les 3 dans la dépense, sans retenue, nous invitant à la débauche amoureuse, d'un son absolu free. Un putain de concert, comme peu. " Michel Henritzi

The last years she's been playing with the crazies from Faust and people like flutist Geoff Leigh from the Henry Cow. Rogier Smal is a drummer from Amsterdam looking for freedom while listening to Ton Steine Scherben on his walkman. They met at the Avant Garde festival in Germany and this will be their very first duo concert. Their aim is to explicitly and subtly exploit shackling in both concept and material. Shackle Affair is Shackle‘s extension into working with guestplayers, extending Shackle into trio constellations. Guests can be musicians, but also visual artists or other performers. At the same time Shackle Affair is also about further developing the Shackle System to use in Shackle’s concerts and in their Converging Objects workshops.
