The ladder is designed to give a cat access to the roof of the right hand side bay window from which it can enter the flat via one of the two sash windows immediately above it. The assembly consists of two separate elements: The ‘ladder’ (a) element and the ‘plank’ (b) element.

a) The vertical ladder is made from rust-proof galvanised steel and timber. It is positioned on the less attractive East façade of the building which already features several aerial TV antennas, a satellite dish as well as rain- and soil-vent pipes. By being set back behind the corner rustication the attractive front elevation of the building is not affected. The ladder is designed to take the weight of a cat only (max. 5kg) and would collapse under the weight of a person. It utilises existing fixings already in the wall to which it connects via plastic ties and its own weighted base to remain upright. The fixings are not of a permanent nature and the ladder can easily be removed without leaving any permanent marks or damage.

b) The plank is an L-shaped horizontal timber element which allows the cat to transition from the top of the ladder to the front of the building and the bay window roof. The element is partially supported by existing heavy duty telecommunication infrastructure fixings in the wall. As it is now, it is not the final design but a temporary solution. The final design will be less visible on the attractive front elevation by being painted white to match the corner rustication and being routed more closely to the existing rainwater hopper. Access to the existing telecommunication cables and the rainwater pipes and hopper are not be negatively affected.
