The Dutch name for the Red Underwing moth (Catocala Nupta) is Rood Weeskind, which translates as "red orphan". This name was most likely chosen because the colours of the moth's underwings were similar to those of the clothes children in Amsterdam's orphanages in the 18th century were obliged to wear.
