I watched Cattywampus, a short film that is available to watch online through the Indy Film Festival. Of course this is coming from a fan of Hamish (and someone super excited to see both him and John Carroll Lynch in The Whisper Man), but my thoughts are under the cut! Light spoilers.

The Unexpected | Indy Shorts Film Festival

Expect the unexpected in these journeys of intrigue, surprise and revelations.

- I haven’t seen everything Hamish has done (yet 👀) but from what I have seen, he shines most brightly when he’s telling a story about characters striving for self betterment. There’s something in his understanding of wanting to be a better human that he is able to translate into his performance, and it adds a brilliant level of earnestness to his characters. Even this 20 minute film he’s able to make me believe that Max wants to make it right between himself and Martha and fill that void with what’s supposed to be there, and not knicked rocks.

- There’s something very grounding about Max and Martha having the accents they do. I’m definitely not an expert on this but giving them an accent typically associated with working class people while they’re talking about their emotions and trauma makes the experience (which is objectively a little ridiculous, but really wholesome) feel much more grounded in reality.

- I really really loved the framing of this film! The shots are very appealing, I love how the dark sets and the thieves clothes create a chiarioscuro that highlights John and Hamish’s faces excellently and forces the viewer to focus on the emotion of the scene.

- The pacing is wonderful. The division of the film into chapters makes it feel like a feature film and gives the viewer space to breathe in between scenes without making it feel drawn out. It gave me a similar feeling of satisfaction to one I have after having watched a feature length film.

Cattywampus, the Askew Pokemon Cattywampus are unpredictable to everyone, except sometimes their own trainers. It may begin to hiss and bite at someone it allowed to pet it a moment before. Its hair stands up to mimic the spines of a Sandslash, but remains harmless. On the other hand, its teeth and claws can carve even into stone.

Types: Normal/Dark Abilities: Hustle / Cornered — Having a status condition makes the Pokemon likely to move first. Hidden Ability: Defiant Gender Split: 87.5% Female, 12.5% Male Egg Group: Field; Male Cattywampus cannot breed.

After working out a Calicozy to level 20, it will trade its Thick Fat for the Hustle of Cattywampus. Cattywampus is a physical sweeper, using Hone Claws to overcome the accuracy loss from Hustle, and packing Acrobatics or Play Rough for Fighting types that try to take advantage of the quad weakness. For STAB, Cattywampus can go big with Power Trip, go reliable with Slash and Crunch, go gutsy with Cornered+Flame Orb Facade, or go all in with Double-Edge, Thrash, or a Last Resort set. While not a great support mon, Cattywampus may get some mileage from Taunt or Torment as a counter-support mon, being immune to Pranksters.

Calicozy normally evolves into Cattywampus, but I have heard some people say their Calicozy evolved into Pokemon with green patterning, rather than Cattywampus's brown, black, and orange. After a lot of hunting, I can confirm this isn't just a shiny Cattywampus, but [Content removed due to a copyright complaint from Glo-Co].
