Latin Project - Catullus 3
In Catullus 3, Catullus talks of the love that Lesbia’s sparrow had for her. The sparrow is gone now, and his honey-sweetness will never be know again.
“passer mortuus est meae puellae,
passer, deliciae meae puellae,
quem plus illa oculis suis amabat.
nam mellitus erat suamque norat
ipsam tam bene quam puella matrem”
“the sparrow of my girlfriend has died,
the sparrow, delight of my girl,
whom she loved more than her own eyes.
For it was honey-sweet and it had known its
mistress as well as a girl knew her mother,”
Similarly, in Nelly Furtado’s song, I’m Like a Bird, she sings about how her love isn’t enough to keep her with her boyfriend. She isn’t sure that their love will last because, “She is like a bird,” and could fly away.
“You're beautiful and that's for sure
You never ever fade
Your lovely, but it's not for sure
And I won't ever changeAnd though my love is rare
And though my love is trueI'm like a bird
I'll only fly away
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is
And baby all I need for you to know is
I'm like a bird
I'll only fly away (I don't know)
I don't know where my soul is (soul is)
I don't know where my home is”
The sparrow is dead, going through a “gloomy journey” while Natasha sings about flying away on a journey to find “where her home is.” Both the poem and the song speak of themes about loosing love.
