Caunos / Dalyan
Caunos ancient city, located within boundaries of Köyceğiz county and in the opposite shore of Dalyan Strait, is established by Caunos, one of twin children of Miletus according to the myth. Canuos, which port city in Ancient Age, remains very far from the shore because of filling the port with alluvial soils, brought by Dalyan Stream. Rock tombs in the entrance of city are the attractive works for the visitors. On the other hand, walls in the length of 3km surrounding the city, stoa, agora, Roman baths, palestra, Demeter terrace and temple, belonging to Hellenistic period, temple of Roman age, constructed in Hellenistic period; temple of Roman age, constructed in the Corinthian order, Vespasian fountain, theatre, constructed in Hellenistic Period but modified in Roman period, water tank, Aphrodite Eupolia Temple, Temple of Terrace, constructed in dor order, Temple and Sanctuary of Apollo, Heroon, Byzantine age church, are some of the order structure remains, located in the the ancient city. City, having a considerably common settlement in Ancient, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods,is abondoned in A.D. century. Even Though Upper Acropolis is fortified and used some time in the Middle Age, this settlement does not take long period. Dalyan Stream, arising from Köyceğiz Lake, meanders to the sea. As coast line is the spawning area of sea turtles, called Caretta, it is under protection.
