True - they are incredibly reliant on gimmicks instead of substance outside a few cases. Toriel was the only one that struck me as having something interesting going on for much of the start of the game, and it wasn’t enough to keep going lol.
You may think being a fan of Cheren is suffering because he's unnoticed, but I'm a fan of Lenora, who's even more unnoticed (and was replaced by Cheren). We cry together.
