I love Whitaker's "ik I would be bored out of my fuckin mind" and subsequent speech on why he loves the ER and EM. I like it because it highlights two things, A. the type of person who usually works and go into EM and B. it highlights whitakers own strength
not every specialty is for everyone, and even if u find the specialty you like not every hospital setting is for everyone. we see this in show in different ways through different people (olgilvi, joy, mohan, javadi etc.) and then we see the after effects of it in the older doctors. EM is just one of those specialties you really gotta want for yourself with how grueling it can be. I think Whitaker is a breath of fresh air for EM on The Pitt cause he shows that at some point everyone who went into this had a reason and purpose. that you have to like and want to deal with all the aspects of emergency medicine (to an extent) bc its relentless. Langdon is right it's basically an adhd's dream come true. there is no predictability, everything can change on a dime, it's fast paced, you deal with both ends of the spectrum from a tummy ache to a person worst day in their life. not everyone can handle that and its okay. olgilvi on paper seems like he should be a shoe in for an EM spot but what the show shows us is that just bc he knows his shit doesnt mean he has what it takes, OR, wants to put himself in that position. which if fine, its so fine, bc you shouldn't stick urself in an environment you cant handle. just bc your good at it doesnt mean its good for you.
Whitaker also shows us that anyone can do anything if thats what they want. on paper he might not seem like the adrenaline junkie ER doc that people expect but thats okay. He knows himself and what he likes and who he wants to be. He wants to be the one helping others on their worst days, hes gained his confidence in his diagnostic capabilities. hes trying to find balance in the risk and reward the ED gives with patients and death. this season highlights the confidence hes grown into and I love it. he put the work in and it shows. which is also why im very curious to see if they elaborate more on the rural medicine cause take it from someone who has seen rural medicine, it aint anywhere near as fast paced as The Pitt, which he has to know.
