I think it was all negative coping. I mean, we already have the maladaptive “undoing” — that is the defense mechanism first seen by Freud (he’s debatable, I know. It’s still taught elsewhere) where he tried to undo Protoman’s death (the negative) by making another child. (the contrary behavior). People who lose children — assuming Light saw Protoman as a child, but that’s a conversation for another day — experience intense anger, guilt, denial, sorrow and fear.

I think these negative emotions would have been turned inward. I think there would have been anxious avoidance.He would never go outside because Wily was repeatedly showing the gruesome death on the screens. I think he self medicated into escape with alcohol, forgetting to eat and sleep while working on Megaman. I think he denied the fact that Protoman was even his son in a sort of compartmentalization of the death he couldn’t handle
