“Did a dog just save my life?” Riley wonders aloud, bewildered as she sits up from where a runner had tackled her into the concrete before a growling mass of fur rocketed from out of nowhere.
She presses a hand against her chest to calm her racing heart but notices her hand is wet with goo from the runner’s now-smashed head and she retches and wipes it off hurriedly on her jeans. Washing it off is officially future-Riley’s problem.
“I would give you literally every treat in the world if I could,” she tells the dog very seriously. “You are the greatest dog, and I really want to pet you, but I also want to keep my hand because I need it, so I will settle for thinking the most loving grateful things in your direction, Hero Dog.”
