She was huge, so much bigger than you could have imagined. The screens of the tvs always made her look so small and dainty. No, it was just the angles, the trolls she surrounded herself with. She was as large as life itself. She was empress for a reason. You attempted not to gawk when you walked into the council room. You had never seen her in person before. Most trolls never would.
You were only a sit in for Kaslet who was off planet. You were to take notes and not speak a word. It quickly became overwhelming. Without Kaslet there you felt exposed, even if you knew that the admiral would keep you safe he didn’t offer the same comfort your commander did.
The meeting was smooth and quick, but not quick enough. You sat there staring at the paper in your hand, only jotting down the notes that you could hear over your heart slamming in your chest. It was hard to swallow, it was hard to listen, it was hard to breathe. As soon as it was over and you were dismissed you were almost running to get out of there. It was too much, you needed to be alone. Ducking down an empty hall, you followed several twists and turns hoping to get somewhere no one would find you. Holding onto your chest, it hurt and your breathing felt like it would just destroy what was left of your war damaged lungs.
Finally you sit, sliding down a wall just to rest and shut your eyes. Make it go away.

Maalik shifts the guitar case over his shoulder with ease, the leather strap was smooth but worn against his fingers. It was a nice feeling after plucking at strings for over an hour. Maalim flexes his fingers subtly to get the feeling back into them. He was still out of practice for the most part. Maaliks moves had been a bit more frequent and his time to himself that suffered because of it, but the calluses on his fingers made it easy to play for long periods, despite his time off.
He looks back at Kaiten with a carefully crafted look of disinterest and eyes him up and down. The lesson had gone all right he supposed, of course it wasn't without a few bumps in the road. Kaiten was a good listener, he'd give him that, and he did practice what he was told, but he didn't look happy about it. The thought of the other's smug look contorting into that of frustration pushed a swell of pride into Maalik's chest. He didn't know why but riling the other up was far more amusing than he thought it would be.
As they start heading to their new destination glances back at him. "Hopefully your shooting is better than your guitar playing. If not you might have to hire me to teach you something else." The tone he uses is critical and the look he levels him with his plain but it's at taunt and they both know it. It was the same kind of teasing that he had used when they spoke to each other, but now it was said with a dry sort of humor that was more his style.
When they finally arrived at the alleyway that Kaiten had indicated Maalik glances around to see if there was anything that they could use for some targets. "You sure you're up to this? You can always back out." And then under his breath, but not quiet enough for the other to miss. "'S not like it's possible for me to think any less of you."
