Day 4 - Last Christmas

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart 

but the very next day, you gave it away

This year, to save me from tears

I’ll give it to someone special

Spending Christmas alone had to be the worst thing in the world.

Caitlin sat in her apartment, her dog Scout leaning his head on her lap. Scout was a three-year-old Husky that she had bought after last Christmas to keep her company. The small tree shone with lights, only a few presents sitting beneath its branches. 

It’s funny how one person can make a holiday so miserable. But that’s how it worked. Jason had broken up with her the day after Christmas last year. And it was no clean breakup. He had cheated. Gone to a party, slept with some girl they had both known from high school. That was the week before Christmas.

They had spent that Christmas day together and it had been the best she’d ever had. He was so loving and attentive. That’s why it had come as such a surprise the next day when he had packed all of his things when she was out of the apartment. She had come home to a note, saying that he was leaving and that he hadn’t wanted to tell her until after the holiday so he didn’t ruin it for her.

He was an asshole. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to ruin the holiday, as if waiting til the next day would make her forget. He probably just didn’t want to be known as the “guy who broke up with her on christmas”. But he might as well have. She was miserable, she couldn’t deny that.

She had tried to get over him, going on a few dates with other guys. Her best friend, Nathan, had been there for her the entire time. But all she had been left with was a “forever alone” attitude and the strangest of feelings for her best friend.

Speaking of Nathan, her phone lit up and his name was on the caller ID. 

“How’s my favorite christmas elf?” 

She could only respond with a sigh. It was Christmas morning and she was alone. How did he think she was?

“That bad, huh?” he said quietly. 

“No one should ever have to spend Christmas alone, Nath. It just makes you feel even worse.”

“Well, you won’t be alone much longer,” he said cheerfully. “Buzz me in!”

A smile made its way to her lips for the first time that day. She walked over to the buzzer and pressed it, allowing the door downstairs to open. She went to her own front door and opened it, leaning against the doorframe to wait for him. Scout sniffled his way across the floor and poked his head out next to her. 

The elevator down the hallway let out a ding and Nathan walked out, carrying multiple bags. As he made his way to her door, she reached down to grab a few of them out of his hands. She held the door open for him and they walked into the kitchen.

He set down his bags just in time for her to wrap him in a tight hug. 

“I wish you were always this happy to see me,” he said, his hands moving to her hips. He pressed his lips to her forehead. 

“Maybe if you always bring me this much alcohol, I will be,” she said with a smile, gesturing to a bag that contained four bottles of wine. 

“Here’s the plan: cook an awesome dinner, get really drunk, and watch Rudolph. Sound good?” 

Scout barked, making Nathan laugh as he leaned down to pet her. Nathan and Scout had a special bond that always made Caitlin smile. Scout was a rescue dog, his previous owners had been abusive. The dog was jumpy with most people and very scared around strangers. Nathan had a calming affect, one that Caitlin appreciated. 

“Sounds like a plan,” she said, grabbing a bottle and the wine opener. She pulled two glasses down from the cabinet as Nathan started grabbing things out of the bags. Moments later, the counter was filled with the makings of a full Christmas meal. 

“You didn’t have to do all this, Nathan. Really, this is all unnecessary,” Caitlin said as she handed him a glass. 

“I knew how you’d get around Christmas this year, Cait. I had to be around to make sure that he wasn’t able to ruin two holidays in a row,” Nathan said, giving her a look. He had never liked Jason. He never explained why, just would mutter things under his breath when Jason came by, or would always give her a certain look when she talked about him. 

“But what about your family?” 

“C’mon, Cait. You know that I can only spend so long at a family dinner before I lose my mind. Though Jess was going to come but she got bribed into helping with dessert. She’ll come by tomorrow, though. She has a present for you. Oh, and one for Scout too,” Nathan said, with a sip of wine. Scout perked up immediately at the mention of his name so Nathan kneeled down to scratch his ears again.

A few hours later, the food had all been eaten, the leftovers stocked in the fridge. Two of the bottles were empty.

Caitlin was curled up in a blanket on the couch, her head resting on Nathan’s chest and her feet in his lap. A glass of wine was in her hand, held at an angle so that it would have spilled. Lucky for both her and the white carpet, there was not a drop of liquid left in it. 

Rudolph was just about to save Christmas with his gleaming red nose, which was Scout’s favorite part. The dog was curled up right in front of the tv, gnawing on a bone while watching the screen. 

Nathan had a warm smile on his face, partly because of the alcohol but mostly because of the company. 

He looked down and saw a bit of a frown on her face. He placed his wine glass on the table and tucked his fingers under her chin, tilting it upwards. 

“Hey, you,” he murmured. 

She forced a small smile on her face but a small tear made its way down her cheek.

“Hey, there’s no crying on Christmas,” he whispered, wiping it away.

“It’s not because I miss him, you don’t have to worry about that,” she said with a sniffle. “I just...I thought I had something so special with him and now I’m scared that I’ll never find it again.”

“Of course you will. You’re an amazing girl with so much to offer. Someone will realize that.”

“But...never mind,” she said, turning back to the television.

“What is it, Caitlin? You can tell me, you know that.”

On tv, the misfit toys were depressed, convinced that Rudolph wasn’t coming to save them.

“It’s nothing, really,” she said, watching as the toys saw Rudolph’s shiny nose coming towards them.

“Don’t pull that with me, Caitlin. I know it’s not nothing.”

“Well, there’s someone I can imagine having that same kind of relationship with. Someone who would make me so happy.”

“Oh really? And who is it?”

She kept her eyes focused on the tv. She watched as the little elves dropped the toys out of the sleigh to go make a child happy on Christmas morning. 

“It’s...It’s you, Nath. It’s always been you, I just didn’t figure it out until now,” she turned to see his surprised face and it made the words get all jumbled. “But, it’s fine, really, it’s fine. You...I...never mind, pretend I never said anything.”

“Woah, woah, woah. It’s okay, Caitlin. Calm down.”

“Ugh, I feel like such an idiot, I shouldn’t have said anything.”

“Did you ever stop and think that maybe I’ve thought about that too?” Nathan’s eyes bore into hers, causing her breath to catch in her throat. She couldn’t say a word, could only shake her head.

“Well, I have. I didn’t like Jason because I knew that he wouldn’t give you all that you wanted. He wouldn’t keep his promises, wouldn’t treat you right. And...I was right. And I hated that I was right. I just wanted to see you be happy. And of course, I’ve always wanted to be the one who made you happy but I would’ve been okay if it wasn’t me, too.”

Caitlin was still too shocked to say anything. She stared at him, her eyes wide. It took her a few minutes to get it together.

“Nath, why didn’t you tell me?”

“Like I said, I’m happy if you’re happy, no matter who it’s with. And you seemed so happy with him and I couldn’t break that up.”

Instead of responding, she pulled him in for a kiss. Nathan was a bit taken aback but quickly reciprocated. When they pulled away, she looked at him before breaking out into a fit of giggles.

“We are probably the biggest idiots in the world,” she said with a shake of her head. 

“Pretty sure I’d have to agree with you there.”

Scout perked up and jumped up on the couch, snuggling in between the two of them. 

“I’m really glad I didn’t have to be alone this Christmas,” Caitin murmured, reaching up to give him a kiss on the cheek.

“I promise you won’t have to be alone for Christmas ever again,” he replied, pulling her closer.

Caitlin yawned, curling the blanket tighter around her shoulders. She fell asleep to the sound of jingle bells and “Ho Ho Ho”s on the tv. Nathan looked down at her and kissed her forehead, reaching to scratch Scout behind the ears.
