The Embrace of Love and Death, Chapter 17: Ghosts of the Past

Chapter Summary: Astarion and Miss Fortune finally sit down to talk about the monster hunter and everything his presence in the swamp entails. It feels like Cazador is lurking in every corner.

“Right before you landed the killing blow, Gandrel started asking me if I had any idea what you’d done to their children. What did he mean by that?” Miss Fortune asked.

Astarion winced like he’d been struck. “Truth for a truth?” he offered meekly.

“Oh no, I think I get this one for free.”

Astarion downed the rest of his goblet in one fell swoop. The terror that was plainly written on his face took on an additional layer of emotion. One Miss Fortune couldn’t easily place. His eyes darted to the side and he rubbed the bite scars on his neck as he thought.

“I didn’t have a choice,” Astarion began. “Cazador ordered me and the other spawn to do it. It was one of the last things I did for him before the abduction, and honestly I’d forgotten about it until now given the…upheaval of the past couple of tendays.”

Astarion paused. He still didn’t meet their gaze. With that introduction, Miss Fortune guessed whatever he was going to say was pretty bad. They steeled themselves to keep a neutral expression; having feelings for him didn’t mean they could give him a free pass with everything.

As if realizing he wasn’t going to receive any encouragement at this time, Astarion continued. “We were compelled to go into the Gur camp outside the city and kidnap their children. We were not told why, only to do it. They’re probably all dead now. We brought them to Cazador just like the rest of our victims.”

Oh shit, Miss Fortune thought. Whatever they imagined he was going to say, this was arguably the worst-case scenario. Miss Fortune covered their mouth with their hand, trying not to betray anything. They waited a long time for Astarion to continue.

“…I’m not proud of it,” he said at last. “But as we’ve established I was unable to disobey. If I tried, he would have forcibly moved my body to obey his commands and then flayed me over and over afterwards. He was a monster to us all, but he did so like to torture me. He took special pleasure in my pain; said my screams sounded the sweetest. So there you have it,” he said, looking at them at last.

His eyes burned with defiance, but he bit his lower lip in a way that betrayed his need for acceptance. Miss Fortune studied the way he’d closed off his body language, how he kept his hands out of reach and how his crossed legs created a barrier between them. Gods, there was so much heaviness to think through here.

“Will you show me a memory through the tadpole?” Miss Fortune asked carefully. “Of a time when you tried to disobey and were made to comply anyway. Any example you want.“

“You don’t believe me?!” Astarion sneered.

“I want to. But you have to know how awful kidnapping a whole tribe of children is. I need to be completely certain. Especially if I’m going to be convincing when I defend you against people like Wyll. I’ll consider that your truth in exchange for mine about the people who used my real name.”

The vampire considered for a good while. While he thought, Miss Fortune got up and refilled both their goblets, then took the bottle out to the provisions table to grab a second one of the same type. By the time they returned, Astarion had shifted position so he was leaning forward, elbows resting on his knees and hands steepled as if in prayer.

“I hope you understand what you’re asking for, little bird,” Astarion said wearily.

Miss Fortune hoped so too. There was no other way that they could think of to be certain Astarion was being fully honest with them, though. Proving his honesty wasn’t as critical when he was merely asking for their blood or talking about being forced to bed thousands of people. But if there had to be a line, mass kidnapping of children would be it. They wanted to believe him so badly. Because if he was lying, if he was able to resist Cazador’s commands and chose to do this, then they had made a terrible mistake in trusting him.

“Whenever you’re ready, Star,” they said nervously.

Since Astarion died at 39, and elves live for a really long time. I sometimes wonder what happened to his family. Unless they had him at an older age they could still be alive at the time of the game.

So what do you think happened to Astarion’s parents

Cazzador(k) killed them

They’re alive and unaware Astarion is undead

They died of non-vampire reasons
