And here it is, tonight's beautiful sunset from south Carlsbad beach. This is my favorite stretch of Carlsbad, driving north along this stretch of coast highway is a visual treat. Something about this incredible view just makes me want to take a deep breath, roll the windows down and blast the tunes. It's truly a reminder of how lucky I am to be here. I haven't photographed a sunset in a while, I tend to go full blast after something until I burn out. It's like that with everything I shoot, surfing, wildlife, landscape you name it. I get an idea and pursue it with all my energy and strength until I don't want to shoot that anymore and I move on to the next thing. I wasn't planning on shooting a sunset tonight, but man seeing all those beautiful elements working off of each other was just to tantalizing. I had to stay and I'm glad I did, didn't know that I'll be shooting sunsets like crazy now....but if it looks like it will be a memorable one you can bet I'll stick around. Hope everyone got a glimpse of this one to finish out your day. A pair of female mallards searching the water with their bills. This was the last of the light yesterday and I saw these two ducks taking the long way around. Oh they took their sweet time and the light quickly dwindled, it was a bit of torture for me seeing this shot in my head but facing the real possibility that by the time they got to this spot the light would be gone. What can be done though, I can't force them to move faster and my impatience just leads to frustration. So I sat there in the mud surrounded by flies and waited. Wouldn't you know it though that as the light faded it became a deeper red and orange and the reflections in the water became that much more intense. Had they arrived even a minute or two earlier it would be a much different photo lacking that beautiful reddish tone. Often you just have to sit and wait for things to unfold, we convince ourselves that it's the end because things aren't working out the way we want them to. Yet there are times that things just work out even better then you could have ever hoped. There is something to be said for letting go and sitting in stillness. It's good to go back to your roots, to remember why you do what you do in the first place. Lately I have been doing a lot of sports oriented photography, surfing and SUP mostly and some landscapes when I can fit them in. Don't get me wrong, I love....LOVE what I do, anything that gets me behind the lens my heart just skips a beat. While I love shooting the action stuff it is in nature that my heart has been and it will always be there. It draws and beckons me always that pull to go and capture something beautiful. I decided to follow that call this afternoon and went to shoot at lake calavera. The ongoing drought has truly changed the face of our landscape and lake calavera is no exception. Huge portions of the shoreline are now exposed reavealing new things and providing new opportunities. Seeing the water so far back is truly heartbreaking for me but I'm not one to pass up such opportunities. The dry lake bed has drawn all sorts of birds, egrets, great blue heron, killdeer, ducks, gulls you name it. They come in search of food and give us a window into their behaviors. I had a blast, to be down low in the dirt, covered in sweat and sinking in mud bugs crawling all over me....may sound like a nightmare to you. To me though it's the small price to pay to be able to witness the many spectacles and splendors of our wildlife. This was one of those gratifying and heart stopping moments. A beautiful Carlsbad summer afternoon as a squirrel would see it 🐿 the diminutive size of the GoPro make it perfect for a lot of things, such as shooting through openings along the sea wall. Just like any camera though it can get fooled by an expansive range. Knowing how to work the scene helps in getting the best outcome. For this I didn't care about anything in the shadows and didn't mind having them go completely black. But because of this large black area the camera gets fooled into thinking that it needs to open up exposure get shadow detail, if this happens the shots comes out way to bright and you lose all detail in the sky.
