CBS Calls Trump Lawsuit 'An Affront To The First Amendment' In Motion To Dismiss Case

The president is suing the network for $20 billion over the editing of a "60 Minutes" interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris.

CBS on Thursday filed two motions to dismiss President Donald Trump’s amended complaint against the network over its editing of an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election campaign. Paramount Global, CBS Broadcasting Inc., and CBS Interactive Inc., the three defendants in the case, argued that Trump’s lawsuit, which was amended last month, in part, to add Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) as a plaintiff, is “an affront to the First Amendment and is without basis in law or fact.” Trump and Jackson “seek to punish a news organization for constitutionally protected editorial judgments they do not like,” the defendants said. “They not only ask for $20 billion in damages but also seek an order directing how a news organization may exercise its editorial judgment in the future,” they added. “The First Amendment stands resolutely against these demands.” Trump’s legal action stems from two different versions the network released for Harris’ answer to a question about Israel during a “60 Minutes” interview broadcast in October. Trump has accused the network of election interference over what he described as deceptive editing of the show’s sit-down interview with Harris, an assertion that has been repeatedly disputed by CBS. “The answers that aired on each news show were simply excerpts of a single answer Vice President Harris gave to a single question, and taken together, viewers heard virtually all of Harris’ answer,” the CBS motion said. CBS has also released the full transcript and camera feeds of its interview with Harris following pressure from Brendan Carr, the new chair of the Federal Communications Commission under Trump.

CBS rightly calls Donald Trump’s frivolous lawsuit against the network “an affront to the 1st Amendment.”

Two Worlds of Star Trek Become One - CBS & ViaCom merge to build mega streaming service

It’s been confirmed today that the two worlds of Star Trek are to come one with the merger of CBS & Viacom.

CBS owns the television right to Star Trek and Paramount owned by Viacom own the film rights. There were some confusing and bizarre rules about what each could do. This was part of the reason JJ Abrams created the alternate timeline, the Kelvin Universe, version for the most recent three films. The had Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. This even affected the CBS streaming Star Trek: Discovery when the original Enterprise appeared. The rule seems to be 25% had to be different.

Star Trek films hit buffers

The Star Trek film plans recently hit the buffers. JJ Abrams & co had planned to make them much more ‘blockbuster’. More action & and with a larger budget. The had secured the links of Chris Pine on promises that over time they would be paid more and more. Their plans did not go as expected. They did well but not the target to make the money back to cover the big budget. This resulted in what would have been their fourth film being shelved. This was partly because Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth did not want to take less than their agreement.

Star Trek streaming

Meanwhile, CBS has been building up their streaming service. This seems to have been mainly based on the big draw of Star Trek. So far we have had two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. There are also plan a Star Trek: Picard series & other Star Trek spin-off. The idea is to have some new Star Trek all year round.

Viacom’s owner Summer Redstone

I first came across Viacom’s owner Summer Redstone at a Las Vegas event to unveil a Star Trek themed Hotel Casino. He was pretty old then. He separated CBS & Viacom in 2006. Later his daughter, Shari Redstone, took over the ownership of the companies. Over the last three years, she has pushed for the companies to merge. Today she has managed to revise the separation.

ViacomCBS Inc will be the name of the combined companies. It will include CBS’ broadcast network, the streaming service CBS All Access, and movie studio Paramount. Plus there will be cable networks like Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, and Comedy Central!

The basic thinking is to merge Viacom’s streaming service Pluto with CBS’s All Access. The idea is they will be able quickly to move up the ranks and challenge the big boys, namely Disney, Comcast, AT&T, and… Netflix!

Shari said in an official statement today:- “My father once said ‘content is king,’ and never has that been more true than today.”
