call this a hot take, but the canon c!sbi dynamic going tits up followed by months of confusion and zero solid clarification from either phil or techno on what their characters’ relationship with c!tommy’s was supposed to be and what their history was if not that hits different after cc!techno’s red festival cold takes.
the c!sbi family dynamic was fully canonized both by the cc’s and in character up until they were on track for doomsday, where cc!techno said that his character wouldn’t hurt his family in the ways that c!techno had hurt tommy, tubbo, and wilbur. which in turn left phil in fatherhood-limbo in a “will he or won’t he” with being tommy’s up until he just fully decided No he has no relationship with that child.
all of this despite the fact that there was no way to retcon out both of them having known tommy pre-dream smp without completely scrapping many months worth of dialogue, much of which Was genuinely plot relevant (including phil breaking out of house arrest to check up on techno after the failed execution and stopping to watch the cabin and leave because he decided that everything would be okay as long as techno and tommy were safe. tommy who he hadn’t known would be there until he saw him).
this was cutting off months of everything from hints to outright confirmations to make their characters look better because they’d centered them around concepts of Loyalty while in the same breath burning bridges with people who were supposed to matter to them over comparatively little.
and I can’t help but wonder if we literally only went through that whole retconning debacle because techno didn’t like the idea of having to acknowledge the implications. of having to play his character as having Anything to do with tommy’s in the aftermath because that would mean dealing With that aftermath. if it was done solely to try to remove the complicated (which is to say: Interesting) parts of their relationship post-falling out to try to mitigate any implications that his character had any obligation To care. which is no different from him insisting that c!techno had nothing in particular to think about dream or his relationship with tommy after everything he’d seen during the bedrock bros arc.
did they Actually gut the most solid canonical relationships their characters had anchoring them to the rest of the server at the time and not replace it with anything (despite the fact that their characters were already deeply entwined with tommy’s in canon Anyways) in a bid to make sure their characters couldn’t be criticized.
