I’m not sure if CC intended for Genesis to come off like an asshole BEFORE degradation was happening to him but by God, the entitled rich kid, I-have-to-be-no1-no-matter-the-consequence really took off with this lad.

If we go with the whole Hojo “raised” Sephiroth, obviously using that word loosely since I imagine it was more of a treat-him-like-a-specimen/student but clearly something happened at some point where Sephiroth’s opinion of the Professor dropped. I’m unsure when Gast appeared or if he was there from the start alongside Hojo but Sephiroth probably compared the two and chose the kinder scientist who was nicer to him.
Also telling that Hojo states that “He always looks down on me” meaning Sephiroth, socially awkward, polite Sephiroth makes it no secret to Hojo how he feels about him. Strange to imagine CC Sephiroth being outright rude on purpose or even scathing remarks. Maybe he just stays silent and Hojo feels his sons scornful gaze upon him and realises, he’s known him from birth so who else would know his mannerisms well. I bet the gap got worse when Sephiroth made actual friends with Angeal and Genesis.
