St. John the Divine Cathedral: The vaulted hallway ceiling reflects sound created in hallway back down to the floor and to the walls. The ribs in the vault slightly disperse the sound. The vault and the ribs in the main space are much farther away from the listener so while the trajectory of the sound is similar it travels back to their ears much later than in this space thus creating a very different experience.

Voices bounce around the room and create a lot of echo. Small sounds such as the clicking a laptop mouse and the steam in the heating pipes can be heard from the other side of the room. Additionally sounds from other rooms seem to travel to this room and become the same volume as activity within this room.

The room is approximately 40′ x 40′ with a 15 foot ceiling. The sound traveling into the room is most likely coming from the stairwells located on either side of the room where are no doors under the archways. 

The materials on the ceiling are plaster and possible painted wood. The walls are masonry and the doors are glass and wood surrounded by polished stone. There are two panels on opposite walls that have large inset glass plates. The floor tiles are also polished stone and have a few fabric mats placed over them.

The designers Lorenzo Fernandez, Davide Passini, Azzurra Pini, and Shreyas R Krishnan collaborated on this drawing to communicate all of the different steps (and thus commercial entities) food goes through before it reaches different types of markets. This visualization is so striking because it uses an analogy of plant growth to represent the contemporary production of food. ie we do not see the roots of a plant growing just as we do not see the path the produce took and the commercial entities that processed it before it reaches the market. Additionally this visualization layers multiple sources of data by creating icons, and by splitting the axis of the grid in the center of the page, allowing the x and y axis to have different meaning ‘above ground’ than it does ‘under the ground’ in the bottom of the image.
