Thousands of kids applied for UA’s hero program, only 40 were chosen. Only 4 were admitted via recommendations. Powerful quirks were rare, even rarer were those who could wield them properly. A lot of people would consider that lucky, yes.
But what if the person didn’t want that future?
It couldn’t be more different from Izuku’s own path. Born into an ordinary family and without a quirk. (Although, he could certainly argue it was luck that had granted him admission here) Heroism so ingrained with his identity he couldn’t well fathom wanting anything else.
He doesn’t vocalize these thoughts, they won’t help. Just shame his classmate back into silence. The fears Yaoyorozu voices are different from his own, but he understands them. At least a little.
“I think...that must be an incredible weight you’ve been carrying around,” the weight of everyone’s expectations. The weight of all the hopes of those who didn’t make it this far. “I don’t think it’s selfish at all,”
There’s a deep sadness in her tone that betrays a depth within. Yaoyorozu’s drowning and Izuku isn’t certain he’s the right person to reach out.
True to his nature, he tries anyway.
“You...don’t have to feel so responsible for things out of your control, you know? Even if it turns out you want to do something else, that’s alright.”
“You’re very kind hearted, Yaoyorozu, I can’t imagine you making a choice that would hurt anyone.”
