I work as a digital content producer during the day, so my main job description is to write articles/web content for our website. By the end of the day/week, I find I have no energy to work on creative writing projects. On weekends, I hardly feel like writing because I spend all week writing. Do you have any suggestions to help create the energy to work on personal projects when all you do all day is write for your actual job?
I won’t bore you with my personal history too much, but when I was a creatively frustrated newspaper reporter, several things drove me to get involved with writing fiction: A need to do something satisfying, fortified by an anger at some boorish, incompetent editors, that motivated me to find an outlet for it; and once I got involved with two online, story-style RPGs, the shared responsibility and obligation to do my part. I pleased my bosses to keep the paychecks coming, but I *really* didn’t want to disappoint my fellow gamer-writers. Maybe I’m a masochist, but it was fun, and I wouldn’t be sitting here typing to you if I hadn’t done it.
My advice is to get a little angry at the fact that something about your day job is stealing from your love of writing. It can be an existential anger (please don’t take it out on the other humans, tho!). Stir up your passion to write what YOU want! If you want to write, you deserve to write for you and no one else.
And if you are so inclined, get involved with a writing partner (our Writing Buddies will re-launch soon) or a group where you have a gentle sense of obligation to participate and can receive positive reinforcement to do so. My luck with Storium hasn’t been so great in terms of games (aka collaborative stories) not dying, but it’s worth a look. There are some excellent, writerly options, you just need to vet your choices carefully. Or start a story of your own! There are also a quantifiable shit-ton of other online games with strong storytelling, too.

I'm looking for good resources for research on tenement era/boarding house era lifestyles for British/Irish immigrants in New York as well as ways to help my characters' speech stay true to the times. Any suggestions?
I typed “tenement life” into Google, and it auto-completed with “in 1900,” so I clicked it. Looks like you might have some luck if you start there. Also found this museum site.
If you’d like to read a book where the author obviously researched the time period extensively (she estimates two of the seven years she spent writing the book were spent on research!) but managed to weave it all in seamlessly, I’d highly recommend The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. It’s a beautiful read. It’s about Syrian and Jewish immigrants (and golems and jinn), but it’s the world you’re looking for.

lo please don't be mad at yourself, your feelings are so so valid. i'm probably more secretly sad about ziall than i am about zayn & i fear i keep coating over the denial like grit in an oyster hoping for a pearl. but you're right about the material bits mattering. i feel that too. :( sending you so so much love and gentleness, i hope the movie helps <3 <3 <3
syar i hope you are familiar enough w/ lotr to know what i mean when i say that you are like the light of earendil--which shines when all other lights go out--that galadriel gives to frodo. it saves his life before the end. you are so constantly calm and reassuring. all these messy awful emotions feel a little less daunting to sort through knowing you’re here w/ me. pinging back all the love & gentleness i can muster <333

lo you are most certainly not alone and I appreciate your honesty so much. I'm sending gentle warm thoughts your way. <3
jamie thank you so much for your kindness <3 i really appreciate it. i honestly thought i was the last lonely kid this side of the fence & it’s extremely heartening to know that, in fact, i’m not.

You are not alone in not being over it!!If I didn't have my boyfriend feelings about Liam I honestly don't know what I'd do rn. Ziall is so important to me. I'm not sure I'll ever be over it. I'm so sorry you're feeling it so much. I'm sending love
i honestly am so so happy that ppl have other parts of 1D to hold onto & love bc not only do 1D deserve that but ppl deserve to have things that have kept them anchored during the storm. i can’t explain how badly i wish that i were one of them, truly. liam is such a sweet teddy graham boyfriend, and maybe someday ziall won’t hurt so bad. all the love to you as well, darling <3

omg lo pls don't be mad at yourself. i feel so much of this. i had more ships than ziall but i feel like i'm blogging from 2013 much of the time. i completely hear you on missing zayn in the context of 1d. i can wish him well on his other ventures but what i miss is the special presence and energy he had with the other boys. AND i'm convinced there are a bunch of us who have similar feelings. i personally can't cope with the celebrations of ot4 very well and have a lot of those tags bl'd.
ahh val yes completely :( there’s nothing in this world that i do not want for zayn in the way of fortune good favor success & happiness. i just mourn for the dynamics he brought to 1D. & i 100% have a hard time with ot4 things; i haven’t bl’d the tag but im very bitter towards it--especially instances where zayn has been forcibly cut out of something old for the sake of hailing ot4. i truly get so angry, & it makes it hard to be genuinely happy for their new accomplishments going forward. idk. sigh *sad hug* :(

I feel the exact same way about zayn. Don't delete or feel bad. It's nice to see someone feels the same way I do, so maybe by posting about your feelings, you're helping both yourself and others
i’m rly happy this impulsive post was able to connect with some people. it is actually a tremendous help to know that there are people who feel similarly. thank you so much <3
ok but how many of you have carried your roommate across your apartment to their bed while whistling the LotR soundtrack

Um. You forgot "If I have two cups of two percent milk, then it's full milk!
this is true. did you guys know that whole milk is 4% milkfat, so two glasses of 2% milk equal one glass of whole milk? #milkmath.
