Of all the things that Simon had ever had to do, this was the most difficult. He’d come to Boston to find his sister and to tell her about their mother. He’d been so determined to fulfill his promise, though, that he hadn’t actually considered the logistics. How would he tell Cecilia? How would that news affect her life? When he’d first met her, Simon had quickly realized that his sister had established herself here. What he’d been expecting to find exactly, he wasn’t sure. Either way, he imagined that the would probably do more damage than good. If it were possible, he would forget that he’d foolishly promised to upturn a stranger’s life, but he’d already set things in motion. He’d sent the text asking her to meet him for drinks at a bar downtown nearly an hour ago. As Simon waited, he tried to outline in his mind exactly how this would go: greeting, small talk, drinks, life-changing announcement.
The closer it got to the time he’d asked her to meet him, the more nervous Simon became. His stomach rebelled against the idea of ruining someone’s life, especially someone he’d taken a liking to so quickly. Maybe, though, she’d be able to see this as less life-ruining and realize that he needed her now even if she had no need for him.
