⟡ they both think that they’re the ones pulling the strings, while also being all too aware that the other thinks the same. they don’t always agree on the way the other goes about things, but they have great respect for each other. Vick’s respect comes from finding someone whose intelligence rivals his own, which scares the shit out of him. he knows that it’s true deep down, but he’ll throw an absolute hissy fit if forced to confront the fact that maybe he’s not, in fact, better and smarter than everyone always, so good luck trying to get him to admit that.

⟡ meanwhile, Cecilia’s respect stems from understanding. they’re both technically doing the same thing: using others for their own gain in order to win Bet and Forgive. the difference is: Cecilia knows what she’s doing is working, while Vick is crumbling under pressure. begging others for their cards, and demanding respect out of others without having earned it first. that’s no way to get what he wants, and Cecilia knows it. but do you honestly think she would try to help him? oh goodness no! some words of advice, sure — because she knows Vick is way too stubborn and too far gone into the mask that it’d be futile to suddenly switch up on everybody now. but she’s certainly not going to try and fix him, she did enough of that with her last husband, thank you very much.

⟡ she’s the epitome of “I just wanna stand over his shoulder and see what he can possibly fuck up next”

⟡ he’s like a little jester in Cecilia’s mind. she finds it funny to tease him, and finds that inner manchild pathetically adorable, especially contrasting with his arrogant persona and how miserably he’s failing to keep it up

⟡ but even despite their… mind games, they’re actually quite similar in a lot of ways. they both like expensive clothing, cocktails, both lived in the high society of Modos, and are purposefully playing into patriarchal roles. for this reason, well… I mean, he basically fell right into her lap!

⟡ nobody would bat an eye if they were dating. it’s so perfect for the little characters they’re playing, something predictable the audience who are oh-so obsessed with putting people into tiny boxes can latch onto. a submissive woman and a dominant man, when it’s actually the other way around behind closed doors

⟡ of course, Vick tries to remain in control of the relationship. he’s so obsessed with being in charge it’s practically comical, but thus works out well for Cecilia when they’re on stage. the crowd absolutely eats up the dark, sexy businessman act. but as soon as they’re off-stage, drinking together in the bar, those roles they’ve set for themselves go completely null.

⟡ Cecilia puts her hand on Vick’s thigh and he’s a blushing mess. she points this out, calling him cute, to which he immediately gets defensive as a way to try and keep his image in tact. Cecilia reminds him that nobody is watching right now. she reminds him that they don’t even have to be acting at all in the present moment, so why don’t they just drop the acts for a little bit and have some fun?

⟡ but Vick doesn’t trust this in the slightest. he rolls his eyes, asking her if she takes him for a fool. Cecilia teasingly questions this, bringing up his less than spectacular display in Blackjack, to which he storms out of the room.

⟡ …but she was actually being honest, for once. sure, maybe a slight ulterior motive of wanting to get to know more about the behind the scenes of Bet and Forgive, but what that was only a small part of it. what she said was mostly true. Vick has piqued her interest, she really is quite curious how he is behind all of those walls he’s built up — if he is anything at all. but all Vick does is fear the woman that Cecilia is beneath this all.

⟡ so basically: a lot of mind games, a lot of curiosity, a lot of fear, and a fuck ton of tension. what kind of tension it that is up for interpretation 👀
