Caddo Lake Review
Finding a film to watch can be difficult. There is so much to choose from with todays streaming options. Oftentimes, we find surprise movies when checking the upcoming films section. That's how the trailer for Caddo Lake appeared.
It's a mystery thriller that works very well from the onset. We get a series of glimpses into fractured home lives of all the main characters. The idea of the core is about unresolved trauma and the conflict that brings to the people we love.
After 8 year old, Anna Bennett disappears, the town folks begin their search. It leads to a shocking discovery. At one part of the lake, there are eerie things happening to those who find themselves wading through the water.
It works because the mystery keeps you invested, and the actors then carry that forward. Dylan O'Brien serves as the films top bill along with Eliza Scanlen. The two never share a moment of screen time together, but their characters are linked through an intertwined story. One that can be hard to follow but not impossible if you truly want to see where it is going.
You can ask yourself how any of this could happen, but like with any great movie, sometimes you just need to believe. It is a small-scale story filmed on location at the real-life Caddo Lake in Karnack, Texas. The real-life lake crosses the Lousiana and Texas border. Using the real-life lake made the film feel more authentic as the means of transportation are how people would move about in real life.
It could have benefited from a little more explanation as to how the mystery of it all works. Without spoiling the twist of the film, we end up learning very little about how it all works. There are efforts to tie all the bows on this particular story and these characters. It does provide a solid resolution to both core characters while keeping the concept more of an unexplained supernatural phenomenon.
This film is thoroughly enjoyable if you are not the type that needs everything explained. O'Brien is a solid and bankable lead, and Scanlen does a great job carrying the second part of the story alongside him. It is being classified as a horror movie on certain sites that you can frequent even though though it is more sci-fi. It's hard to classify a film like this that borrows so much to tell such an intimate story of loss, trauma, and the power of healing. It's one that people will have to watch for themselves and determine how the events, the twists, and the overall story make them feel.
