⁣ Canon EOS 250D | 29mm | 1/320s | f/8 | ISO 100⁣ Taken on 01/04/2021.⁣ ⁣ Cella Monte, a charming village located in the Unesco-awarded Monferrato area the province of Alessandria, is included in the list of 'I borghi più belli d'Italia' (the most beautiful villages in Italy).⁣ ⁣ The village can be traced back to medieval times, probably around the 12th century during the period of the Holy Roman Emperor Federico I.⁣ ⁣ I don't know how long the tuff stone houses date back to, but they are incredibly beautiful and go hand in hand with the picturesque rolling hills that surround the village.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Cella Monte is accessible by bus from Casale Monferrato. ⁣ Samsung Galaxy Note 10+⁣ Taken on 01/04/2021.⁣ ⁣ Located about 50 kilometres east of Turin and around 25 kilometres northwest of Alessandria is the small hilly village of Cella Monte, which joined the club "Italy's most beautiful villages" in 2018.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ It was by pure chance that I got to visit Cella Monte in June last year because it was where one of my adult classes decided to have a meal to celebrate the end of the school year. Almost two years on and the village is just as beautiful as it was in spite of the endless empty streets.⁣ ⁣ I'm delighted at how I managed to capture the 'Pietra da Cantoni' (Cantoni stone) omnipresent in the streets. It's a unique type of stone found in the Monferrato area but more so in Cella Monte.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣ I love how the colour highlights the urban fabric of the village and fits so well with medieval setting, complementing landmarks such as the castle, whose tower you can make out in the background and which has functioned as a manor house since the 17th century; the parish church of 'San Quirico e Giuditta', built in 1610; and the palaces and garden villas connected by scenic routes.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Cella Monte is also home to the 'infernot', meaning 'tiny place' and in the Piedmontese dialect 'little hell'—basically narrow, underground rooms hand-carved into the stone that are used to store wine.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣⁣ ⁣ You can head down and see one for yourself by taking a bus from Alessandria to Cella Monte with 'Arfea'.
