I took this screenshot of my cellular neuroscience class. My professor said exactly what I wrote in the right corner. He’s a very passionate scientist; he has a minor in the humanities and many other areas of study, and it shows so clearly in his devotion when he speaks about what he loves. He declaimed a poem he wrote about the virtue of life, about how we should take advantage of being alive, learn the arts and sciences, and recognize the privilege of nurturing our minds with knowledge. It made me tear up, and it has stayed with me since the lecture. I have so much respect and admiration for Dr. Khan. I truly hope he knows his worth, he’s a brilliant person and professor. I could rant for hours about how much his class has meant to me.

Two Assistant Professor positions opened at NJIT - Ecology & Evolution and Neuroscience

Our department (Biological Sciences) at NJIT has opened a search for two assistant professors (tenure track), one in Ecology & Evolution, and one in Neuroscience. Position #1: Assistant Professor (Ecology & Evolution: Organismal Sensing)

The Department of Biological Sciences seeks outstanding candidates to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Organismal Sensing in August, 2013. Consideration will be given to higher rank applicants with appropriate levels of academic excellence and demonstrated research accomplishment. Women and members of underrepresented minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

As the myriad forces of environmental change continue to impact both natural and built environments, innovative methods to detect, monitor, and track organisms are a critical first step towards environmental sustainability. This position will involve research using techniques for detecting, monitoring and/or tracking organisms using remote sensing technology with the goal of understanding ecological processes at any level of organization, from the individual to the biosphere. Methodological approaches may include, but are not limited to, traditional remote sensing techniques such as satellite imagery and GIS, or alternative approaches such as RFID, machine vision, sonar, and radar.

Biology faculty also collaborate closely with both the Rutgers-Newark Department of Biology and the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers-New Brunswick. In addition, the New York metropolitan area offers abundant potential collaborators at nearby museums of natural history, botanical gardens, zoos, and institutions of higher education.

Successful candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree in Biology or a closely-related field and possess a strong enthusiasm and ability to teach broadly. Candidates are expected to sustain a significant externally funded research program in their areas of specialization. Outstanding candidates will possess strong research interests with proven research experience and scholarly accomplishment, the ability to sustain a strong externally-funded research program in their areas of specialization, and be eager to collaborate with colleagues from related disciplines.

At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

We seek a researcher with experience and scholarly achievements in cellular and systems neuroscience. Interdisciplinary candidates who work on non-mammalian model systems and use genetic, functional genomics or proteomics approaches to understand neurophysiological processes are of special interest.

Consideration will also be given to applicants at a higher rank who have demonstrated research accomplishments and an appropriate level of academic excellence. Women and members of under-represented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
