100 supporters! Have you heard about Kevin Kelly’s blog about 1000 true fans? The idea is that if an artist (musician, entrepreneur, whatever) can get one thousand fans to support their art, they will make a good living. That’s all they need. Seth Godin takes it a slightly different way. He suggests you create something for the “smallest viable audience.” Sci F’Irish music is definitely a small audience. Any time you fuse two distinctly different audiences together, you shrink the size of your audience. But is it be viable? Yesterday, my 100th supporter made a pledge on Kickstarter (thanks Kris!). That’s one tenth of that 1000 true fans. It pushes Selcouth closer to my big stretch goal of $7500 and two more songs for you. It’s just amazing that so many people appreciate what I do. It’s exciting to see how passionate You are about Selcouth. Selcouth: “when everything feels strange and different yet you find it marvelous anyway.” To this day, I still feel outside every social circle. I feel strange and different. And I’m happy with that. Wow! I am featured on @Kickstarter! How awesome is that!??! I've never been featured before. And I confess I'm a bit blown away... and very honored. I don't know they pick projects. Maybe it's because this is my 10th. Maybe it's because the last one with the Brobdingnagian Bards did so well. Or maybe, they actually love the album idea as much as I do. Selcouth: "When everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway." Carol B said, "I'm so excited for this! I love the video you did for this! I've got positive vibes about this project!!!" I admit I have positive vibes too. It feels sort of like my new songs. I'm working on the lyrics for a new song I hope to have on the CD called "Naked". It's inspired by the episode "Trash" from Firefly. It's about letting down your guard and opening up to someone you love or want to love. My wife told me, "I love the melody, but the lyrics are not quite there." And I wholeheartedly agreed. Something is little off on them. So I edited and rewrote some of the lyrics. One of big problems in the past with my songwriting is that I write verses. I don't edit. I just put it out there, even if there are holes in the story. "Naked" has a great story. It's sort of the story from "Trash". But the first version didn't tell that story. It told three different stories in three different verses. And these are punchy short verses. There's not a lot of time to tell the story. So telling THREE is kind of insane. So I'm trying to rewrite the song to tell ONE STORY. Which is what I'm doing with Selcouth too... I realized today that Selcouth is one story with many chapters. It has an overarching narrative that's told through each song. It's coming together. And if songs don't fit that story, I cut 'em. That's what I did with one song I thought would be on this CD. But it just didn't make much sense. So I guess the fact that Kickstarter has recognized this... in some form or fashion, makes me happy. I may not have an album cover. I may not yet know what each chapter is about. Exploring the Titanic
I like to arrive a day or two early when I go my Celtic Invasion Vacations. This usually helps me get over any jet lag. If there are problems, like lost luggage, I can usually resolve them (not so lucky this time). You also get an extra day to see the sights. … … Yesterday, we visited the Titanic museum. Belfast is full of beautiful sculptures and interesting architecture. The Titanic museum seems like both. Inside, you can enjoy an exciting journey into the creation and ultimate sinking of the infamous passenger liner. You feel the tragedy as you read about individuals who died when that iceberg hit the ship on April 15, 1912. Plus, they wow you with some fun displays using video and even a Titanic “ride” that takes you into the bowels of the ship. … … Afterward, he walked to the Kitchen Bar for a pint and some dinner. It took me a while, but I finally found parking about a mile away from the Hilton Belfast, where I'm staying the night. I didn't have any change so the first thing I did was run around the city to find an ATM and the break the change. What a great way to get exercise after long air travel. . On the walk back, I stopped at a small cafe in an antiques store. I didn't really peruse. Just ate. But it was a cool environment to catch my breath in. .
